Character Name: Andrew Wells
Series: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Age: 21
From When?: After the Angel episode “The Girl In Question.”

Inmate/Warden: Warden; Andrew worked through a majority of Season 7 to redeem himself of his sludgy past. After being manipulated into murdering his only friend, he tried hard to be a good guy by accepting his wrongs and struggling to right them. In the end, he fought alongside the heroes to save the world, even though he was sure he’d die. After this, he dedicated himself to the cause of good, working to recruit newly activated Slayers and guide them in the right direction. He may not be the number one hero, but Andrew has some kind of courage in him. He’s not a bad guy. In keeping with his newfound redemption, Andrew’s deal with the Admiral would be to bring Jonathan back. To revive the person he killed would be the ultimate weight off Andrew’s conscience.

Item: A comic book.

Abilities/Powers: Nothing magical, but Andrew is extremely skilled with demons. He can read demon languages and once was very adept at summoning demons. He’s also begun training as a Watcher and has some fighting skills. Also, he knows some Italian.

Personality: Andrew is a chronic liar. Often, he’ll lie to make himself seem more impressive or to cover up something bad or shameful that he’s done. Mostly, he lies to distance himself from the world. He’ll create stories that make reality (his personal situations and his past especially) easier for him to handle rather than facing the truth of it all. Lately, his lying has been put to semi-good use, as he must lie in order to protect Buffy and other Slayers.

Most men Andrew’s age grow out of bad habits like this, but Andrew is somewhat stunted. Somewhere between his upbringing and his deep-set interest in sci-fi and fantasy, Andrew stopped growing up. He’s started to catch up and has made some significant changes, but he still has work to do. He’s definitely shown how he’s grown in his attitude while dealing with others; when Andrew visited Angel in Los Angeles, he boldly forced Angel to give him the rogue Slayer, Dana, and broke the news that Buffy doesn’t trust Angel any longer. It showed a courage and straightforwardness Andrew hadn’t possessed before. As Andrew has stated himself, people change. Still, some things remain the same. Something deeply affected by Andrew’s immaturity is his inability to come to any realization about his sexuality. So far as Andrew thinks, he’s very straight. His own not-so-subtle comments about the attractiveness of various male celebrities are lost on him.

A weakness in Andrew’s personality is that he’s impressionable and trusting. He wants to be able to trust people and to believe they can be trustworthy. Unfortunately, he’s usually wrong in his assumptions, but it doesn’t often stop him. Someone “cooler” than Andrew is especially likely to earn his trust as he instantly respects someone who is more skilled or more confident than he is. Yes, his trust is sometimes unwisely awarded to those who don’t deserve it, but Andrew is becoming more aware of how he treats people.

Andrew isn’t completely useless, though. He’s very loyal; even in the face of death, he doesn’t run. This is a great indicator to how Andrew has grown in the past years. It used to be that Andrew would turn and run at the first sign of danger, but now he stands and fights alongside Buffy and the others, despite all risks. Since accepting it as a definite possibility when Sunnydale was destroyed, Andrew seems to have lost all fear of death, instead focusing on working towards helping Slayers and eradicating evil.

Something that has helped Andrew grow as much as he has is his willingness to care for other people. He used to shut others out, but since becoming close to Buffy and her friends, Andrew got better at connecting and caring about others. This has been very useful of late, since Andrew was assigned the difficult task of recruiting Slayers, some of which are distrustful or unwilling to accept their fate. Andrew has to be able to connect to these girls and help them understand their calling, something a person would be unable to do without an actual heartfelt desire to care for them.

Andrew is a positive thinker and a good listener. He’s interested in other people and eagerly does his best to help when he can, always seeking approval. He’s loyal to a fault of those he trusts and admires and even puts his own life on the line for people he sees as his true friends. When he isn’t lying or whining, he has a good heart and is very willing to put it to good use.

History: For unknown reasons, Andrew’s parents weren’t very good ones and it’s assumed that his aunt had custody of him (and also of his older brother, Tucker) for an unspecified amount of time-at least in the last part of his teen years. During Andrew’s junior year and his brother’s senior one, Tucker’s interest in demons began to intensify to the point that he sent Hellhounds to his senior prom to kill all its attendees for the sole reason that he couldn’t get a date. None of Andrew’s solo exploits ever got as serious as that. In fact, the worst feat he ever managed was to sick flying monkeys on Sunnydale High’s production of Romeo and Juliet, something the Scooby Gang doesn’t even remember stopping. Andrew is thus easily forgotten by them, often being referred to as “Tucker’s brother.”

During high school, Andrew fell in with fellow outcasts, Warren Mears and Jonathan Levinson. He continued to frequently spend time with them after high school and when Warren suggested that the three of them become super villains and try to take over Sunnydale, Andrew eagerly agreed. It, of course, seemed like a good idea to him at the time. For awhile, the Trio was practically harmless to Buffy, more of an annoyance than a real danger.

Over time, Andrew began to admire Warren, the Trio’s self-asserted leader, to a great degree, trusting and even loving him indefinitely. This proved to be bad for his well-being when Warren bludgeoned his ex-girlfriend and forced Andrew and Jonathan to help him cover up the murder. Having gotten away with murder, Warren only became darker and more confidant in his goals and he wasn’t worried about taking Andrew and Jonathan down that path with him. He really began to exploit Andrew’s trust in him, turning him against Jonathan and making empty promises of power and love. Eventually, the Trio attempted a major heist and Warren left Andrew and Jonathan to take the fall. When Andrew realized he’d been abandoned by the person he trusted most, he fell apart, betrayed to tears.

When Warren accidentally shot and killed Tara Maclay, her powerful witch girlfriend Willow Rosenberg flayed him alive, causing Andrew and Jonathan to flee to Mexico to save themselves. While there, they both began having prophetic nightmares about returning to Sunnydale and investigating the Seal of Danzalthar. During this time, The First Evil began visiting Andrew in Warren’s image and convinces him to return to Sunnydale and kill Jonathan in order to open the Seal of Danzalthar, which would enhance the Hellmouth’s power, something Andrew was unaware of. Believing The First was actually Warren, Andrew obeyed and murdered the only friend he had left.

Soon after killing Jonathan, Andrew was caught by Willow and brought to the Summers household, where he was held hostage for many weeks. When it became obvious that Andrew was no longer a threat, he was finally untied and allowed to move freely within the house, where he began passing the time by baking, drawing, doing chores, and basically anything else harmless he could think of. When it was discovered that Andrew was the only one who could close the Seal, Buffy forced him to admit what he’d done was wrong and was in fact his own fault. After that, he started making a real attempt to stop telling stories. He also accepted that he was likely going to die and that he deserved it.

When the big battle over the Hellmouth did come, Andrew actually survived, but many of his companions did not, including Anya, who had been the closest thing he’d had to a real friend in the past couple of months. He left the battle unwounded, but in a sort of state of shock at his own survival. Sunnydale was turned into a crater while Andrew and the other survivors sped away on a school bus.

The year following the destruction of Sunnydale was challenging for Andrew. He was given very little time to man up and learn how to be a Watcher. On orders from Rupert Giles, one of a very few remaining Watchers, Andrew began travelling all over, recruiting newly-activated Slayers for worldwide squads. Andrew really displayed how he’d grown when, less than a year after leaving Sunnydale, he visited Wolfram and Hart (now run by Angel and his crew). He was called upon when the Angel crew discovered a mentally unstable Slayer. Andrew seemed as though he’d barely changed, besides a new haircut and having a lot more knowledge of Slayers. It wasn’t until Angel’s team had captured and sedated Dana, the demented Slayer, that Andrew showed how he’d really changed; he revealed the team of Slayers that had accompanied him to forcibly take Dana away and revealed to Angel that Buffy’s team did not believe he was on the side of good. He showed that he definitely had matured and was capable of leadership.

Andrew was eventually set up with a semi-permanent residence in Rome, Italy, where he led the Italy squad of Slayers. For awhile, he shared an apartment with a Buffy decoy who had the task of attracting attention to herself to distract from the real Buffy. When Spike and Angel came seeking Buffy, Andrew lied and led them to believe that this was the real Buffy and she was seeing the Immortal. If anything, his lying was successful in that it directed Angel and Spike away from Italy, where their attention was unnecessary, especially given Buffy’s opinion of Wolfram and Hart. Besides Slayer recruitment, Andrew had apparently been spending his time partying and meeting super models, presumably part of the plan to attract evil’s attention to the fake Buffy.

Sample Journal Entry: Dude… this place is kinda sweet. I mean, like, just kinda floating everywhere, you know? It’s totally like being on a weird spaceship! Wild…

Oh. So… I guess I should introduce myself, huh? Okay, so, yeah! I’m Andrew. [He pauses.] Andrew Wells. [He likes to think that he can act like James Bond now. He can’t.] And I’m here to, like, help and stuff. Like, do good, I guess? I’m one of the good guys.

And I should warn you not to mess with me, okay? I’m sort of known for being a hardass. I’ve kicked all kinds of bad guys to Kingdom Come and back. Also, I’m totally a Watcher, which is saying stuff. Pretty sure you all get the idea…

In any case, I’m totally psyched that I’m here! I mean, space boat is awesome enough, but I’m kind of also a Warden here, so, yeah. I have, like, two titles now. I should get business cards…

…yeah.

Sample RP: Andrew sort of hated that he had to lie to Spike and Angel. It had taken him so long to stop lying just automatically when asked even the simplest question. There was a point when Andrew would have lied about his eye color just because it was a compulsive instinct. And he had been doing so good. Almost a year without telling a lie. At least, not a major one; telling Buffy he didn’t know what happened to one of her sweaters totally didn’t count. That was self preservation.

But this? Telling a major lie to Spike and Angel that Buffy was dating the Immortal and was out partying with him every night? When Andrew knew that it wasn’t actually Buffy? That was rough. Especially when he saw how it made the vampires act. Angel was in the living room now getting visibly upset about cookie dough while Andrew primped in the bathroom mirror. And lying to Spike was harder than lying to Angel. Andrew knew Spike, he had a personally history with him, and Andrew even liked to trick himself into thinking they were friends. If anything, they survived the apocalypse together, and that was something. Lying to friends about major things was admittedly more difficult than lying to strangers and that had always held true, even when lying had been a serious habit.

Buffy’s orders. No one could know that Italy Buffy was not the real Buffy. And so Andrew led the lovelorn vampires on without skipping a beat. “The point is she's moving on. You guys do the same, and you might catch her one day. One of you, anyway. But you keep running in place, you're gonna find she's long gone.” It almost worried Andrew that he could still just say something that wasn’t exactly true; Buffy wasn’t with the Immortal. And it was sort of hard to keep them hanging like that, but it wasn’t all entirely a lie. The two of them both needed to get on with their lives. Spike hadn’t even told Buffy he was alive, so what did he expect?

Andrew found himself justifying all his statements as he finished combing his hair back. He heard Spike confess to Angel, “It is a bit silly. Us... chasin' around like a couple of henpecked teenagers.” It made Andrew sigh with relief. Maybe they would finally go back to L.A. and focus on their evil little law firm now. They were really starting to get in the way around here, though he had to silently thank them for attracting attention to Italy. These two sure did have a way of making people look in their direction. But now was time for them to go home and let Andrew do his job. Which, really, he wasn’t bad at. He’d grown up from that whiny teenager trying to take over Sunnydale and was now making a big dent in evil with the Scoobies.

“Buffy loves you both,” Andrew ceded. His heart did go out to them a little, the way they still pined after her when they really didn’t stand much of a chance these days. Buffy’s priorities were elsewhere. Which prompted the continuation, “But she’s gotta live her life. People change.” He stepped out into the living room, decked out in a tuxedo with his hair nicely groomed. Andrew liked his new Bond-esque appearance, and he hoped it would send some sort of message home with these two, especially Spike, who probably still saw him as the ridiculous ex-villain that fanboyed over him a little. Really, that fanboy was still around, he was just wearing a new outfit, and he had learned to keep himself under control. “You guys should try it sometime,” he added, feeling like maybe the added cockiness was unnecessary, but it apparently had some sort of effect.

The knock at the door alerted Andrew of Caprice and Isabella’s arrival and he hurried to answer the door, greeting the models with flattering comments in Italian, then bidding the vampires a quick ciao. He couldn’t say he wasn’t grateful to get away from them. He was starting to really feel uncomfortable with their whining and moaning over Buffy, not to mention being forced to lie so explicitly. He hoped he had some sort of affect on the two of them. Maybe they’d plan things out better next time they decided to go Buffy chasing. And maybe next time, Andrew wouldn’t have to spew nonsense and bits of uncharacteristic wisdom at them.

Special Notes: Andrew will come equipped with all his Watcher gear, which includes a great number of altered weapons, stakes, tranquilizer guns, blades, and some smaller specialized weapons which rarely see action. Andrew just likes having them for show.
