HP DAY 30: What affect has Harry Potter made on your life and how much does it mean to you?
I wouldn't be the person I am today without Harry Potter. Those books raised me, I started reading when I was ten years old in 1999, and that was eleven years ago. They have affected me at so many different stages and levels of life that I'd be a fool to deny their impact.
Most people know me a a book-lover, I'm that kid who's always reading on the bus, who's always reading in a corner at family events, who goes to book release parties. I did not seriously read before Harry Potter. Sorcerer's Stone was first book I had ever picked up that I truly loved. Before I had read a lot, but it was all vane searching through mediocre school titles and picture books. It wasn't until HP that I realize that books could be not only good, but magical.
I spent a good chunk of my high school days spending all my free time on a Warner Brothers Harry Potter thread board talking with HP fans who are affectionately known as the Millionaires. I may not talk to these people as much as I used to, but they were my life, and I am still in contact with the majority of them. During that time I ran an HP news site and podcast. I learned a lot about computers, photoshop, web design and writing.
It was through that group that I was introduced to youtube. And I started watching the Volgbrothers and Five Awesome Girls in January 2008 because I was recommended to them as Harry Potter people. I went on to make my own videos and now have over 600 people watching me. But I don't care about how many people are watching, but who is. Early on when I still only had a few subs (under 50), I made a video response and then HayleyGHoover saw it, and plugged me on the 5AGs. Before that I had made a video response to a Pottercast challenge concerning Pelligrino, another Pelligrino girl saw my video and subbed. I saw some of her videos and subbed back.
I went to Terminus in 2008, alone, knowing no one, hoping to meet people once I got there. I realized that Pelligrino girl (Alex) was going, so I sent her a pm on youtube suggesting we meet up. She introduced me to the Scones, who recognized me from Hayley's plug. I feel in love with the Scones, my magical group of friends.
Click to viewA number of these magical friends are the people I bounce creative ideas off of, while others will be my testing grounds and word-spreaders for my work, and others will be people I end of working with at a professional level, now that I'm entering the industry.
And that's just one aspect of how my life changed. I didn't even discuss how the books altered my brain, How they affected my view of fiction, or how they affected my view of the world. I didn't talk about my experiences with the fandom prepared me for life, or all the little moments spent with Potter people and the characters themselves. Everything I have eve experienced has affected me in some shape or form, and a large percentage of my experiences are directly related to some words that a woman in Edinburgh decided to write down.
