Halloween: Devil's Night or just a misunderstanding?Last night I heard Bill Maher tell the world to give Halloween back to kids. According to Mr. Maher, Halloween was created for the kids. Nice guess. But no, Bill. Again you are spouting like one of our illustrious LJ chroniclers. Halloween is ( Read more... )

Kind of a sidebar.

The whole Satanic thing is deeply rooted in the Judeo/Christian ethos. You said as much, but I figured I'd add a bit. In more detail: Satan, etc, exists wholly within that mythos. One can not be a Satanist outside of that construct.

That's not to say there are not evil 'gotcha' critters rooted elsewhere.

It's not original to note that Christianity adopted/co-opted bits and pieces of other religions along the way. But the Satan stuff evolved internally.

NB! This is an observation from a non-Christian who did a minor bit of study along life's paths.

Good point. Glad you mentioned that actually. As a theology student, I sometimes forget that these observations aren't common knowledge. Thanks for the sidebar, bro.

I always wondered what the true meaning of the holiday was, but I was never tempted to look it up. I can't even watch that Bill Mahr show. Too many people will watch it & think all his political views are correct, when actually he doesn't even think any of them through or care to research anything he talks about.

Exactly. If you take a comedian and give him a panel of actors and reporters (and the occasional politician on the rocks)and let him talk about politics for an hour, it doesn't change teh fact that his occupation and skillset are that of a comedian whose primary function is to make us laugh. So why do people take him seriously? I used to hear the exact same "observations" from my alcoholic loser friends who'd watch 20 minutes of Fox News between bong hits.

You do realize that poem is about kidnapping and stalking and stuff, right? And hints at a gang rape.

yes. but it is still beautiful. the way the "stalker" expresses his love and desire for the girl.. it's just lovely. i wish someone felt that way about me. it's a very nice poem.

You know, I'm supprised I don't really know more about the subject of Halloween. It's one of my favorite nights. I do know that it has something to do with "All Saints Night". That was not mentioned in your speal and I'm not even sure if it's true. Aside from that, fuck all those who want to end it. It's a fun a night. A night to contemplate hevean and hell. While kiddies collect candy, adults may do the real deed. To me, I have an appreciation for it. A time to be someone you're not. A time for hell. A day. A day to consider what's right and wrong. Fun and evil. A little hell in the koolaid.

Anyway, I dug your poem. :)
