It was a race against time. Woohyun knew the seconds were ticking down to his demise. Glancing around the corner of the building, he slunk into the shadows and took a few deep breaths. For everything Sunggyu taught him, he was surprisingly predictable when it came to his daily activities. It took Woohyun longer than he thought it would to disappear off the face of the Earth. It took even longer to build a new image and re-emerge in a way no one at his old job would suspect him.
You are not a civilian, and from this point on, you never will be. Wise words from Sunggyu. Woohyun stared at the grocery store across the street to see his old mentor step outside carrying a brown bag. Sandwich supplies, fruit, instant noodles, and ice cream. Too predictable. Didn’t you tell me not to fall into my civilian identity, Woohyun thought.
Woohyun followed from a distance, adjusting the fake glasses and hat to keep his face covered. It seemed like Sunggyu was well known in this neighborhood. The kids that ran by greeted him with laughter and smiles. Men waved to him, women batted their eyelashes at him. If only they knew what he was really capable of doing.
Sunggyu turned into a townhouse, and fumbling with his keys, opened up the door and stepped inside. Woohyun stopped dead in his tracks and swore to himself as his phone vibrated in his pocket. Reaching into his pocket, he glanced at the screen to see an unknown number, knowing who it would be before he answered.
“Try harder?” Woohyun asked.
“Yeah, try harder. You still have a lot to learn.” Sunggyu laughed, and Woohyun felt the handcuffs around his wrists before his vision went black.
