Title: Riding the Fence
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: a smidge of underage drinking, a very little bit of non-show worthy language (a handful of f-bombs, otherwise it’s all show-style speak)
Word Count: 62,549
Summary: Summer of 1999: After becoming injured on a hunt w/ his father & brother, and despite his wishes, 20 yr old Dean is left w/ family friend & fellow hunter, Bobby Singer while John & Sam leave on a week-long hunt.
Not one to let Dean stew too long in his own juices, Bobby quickly puts Dean to task. Along the way, the window into Bobby’s world is opened and through it Dean learns many things about Bobby’s life and he may just learn something about himself as well.
Author’s Notes: I’ve chosen to do this story to further show how Bobby lives carefully balanced on the fence between the hunter’s world and the real world; To show that a life like that is possible (even for Dean) if all the pieces fit snugly; To show the beginning of Bobby and Dean’s father/son relationship and how profound that relationship becomes in both of their lives.
Thanks: My eternal thanks to my beta, my beloved
zara_zee. It seems like only yesterday, but actually, it's been a year ago now that we met online and my life has never been the same. Thank you for your constant companionship, your never-ending support, both in my writing and in my real life, for knowing what I was thinking before I thought it, for encouraging and/or putting up with my craziness and for being my partner in this adventure. I love you!
Thanks so much to
thruterryseyes for her wonderful art. She accepted the challenges laid out before her and thrilled me with each and every update. I can never fully express my gratitude for all her hard work and beautiful art.
I also owe love and hugs to my wonderful friend,
twnchesterangel who at the drop of a hat was always there with an emergency reference. The woman is a walking, talking encyclopedia of SPN and a damn fine pimp.
And finally, to
reapertownusa, Thank you so much for hosting such a wonderful challenge and for being so supportive and available.
