LA and New York are like different worlds.
Personally, I think LA is easier to live in when you don't have a based career.
You should visit both and decide from there.
Save in the meantime! Something always gets fucked-up in a big move (Like, flat-mates rip you off, can't find a job, car breaks down, etc.) You'll be happy you saved the extra $$ to cover your ass.

times square and central park are not the best places in the city. not by a long shot. in fact, times square is probably my least favorite area. the times square area isn't residential, and even if it was, nothing goes on there except tourist crap things. at night it's deserted.
and there's nothing around central park either, except rich people.
not to mention rent anywhere in manhattan is extremely expensive, as is the cost of living.
a young person like yourself wouldn't have any interest in living in either of those areas.
