sports_slash #01 - Comfort
He wondered if it was wrong of him to not want to wake the man he knew had unintentionally fallen asleep next to him; but there was something to be said about the feeling of another body next to you in bed, even if it was David's.
#02 - Kiss
Jose slowly wakes to find himself in the arms of an already awake David, and with his mind still hazy with sleep he has no inhibitions about raising his lips to meet his best friend's.
#03 - Soft
"Sometimes I still can't believe that I get to put on this uniform everyday," David says to him in a whisper as he runs his fingers over the stitching of his jersey.
#04 - Pain
The catcher's knee slamming into his chest, his lungs emptying, his back hitting hard against the dirt, and Jose is struggling just to breathe as he is surrounded by people at home plate.
#05 - Potatoes
David insists that making mashed potatoes from a box is considered cooking for himself.
#06 - Rain
The two young infielders sit side by side on the bench staring out at the rain as it falls down onto the tarp, a comfortable and relaxing silence surrounds them.
#07 - Chocolate
"Watch this," David says as he steals an M&M from Jose, tossing it high in the air, and after catching it in his mouth, he smiles wide and raises his arms in victory.
#08 - Happiness
"I'm just...happier, I guess, when we're together," David's smile and a hand placed at the small of his back lets Jose know the feelings behind his words aren not one-sided.
#09 - Telephone
"Sorry I'm calling so late J. I was just wondering...do you think it'd be okay if I came over? I can't sleep."
#10 - Ears
He's not quite sure when David figured it out, but there is a spot right behind Jose's ear that if kissed ever so slightly will send instant chills throughout his whole body.
#11 - Name
"Uh...me llamo...es...David," laughing a bit to himself at the grammatical error Jose shook his new friend's hand, amused at the fact that he had at least tried, and he thinks to himself that this David had one of the most genuine smiles he had ever seen.
#12 - Sensual
There were nights where they would just lay in bed together lazily kissing, bodies tired from the day's game, and they'd let time slip away between the slow movements of their lips.
#13 - Death
When youth and love mix with baseball and winning, one develops a strong feeling of immortality.
#14 - Sex
Sometimes it's slow and sometimes it's hard, but it's always steady and intense making his nerves jolt and his mind race, and Jose admits to himself that it's the best he's ever had.
#15 - Touch
Jose lightly places a hand upon David's chest as he sleeps, feeling his heart beat and his body slowly rise and fall with each breath.
#16 - Weakness
Jose has nightmares of a botched play by a shortstop, an error that costs them a must-win game; and he see himself standing in front of a full house at Shea, alone.
#17 - Tears
David coughs involuntarily and his eyes begin to water as he reaches out for his glass; Jose does his best to bite his lip and not join in the laughter from the rest of the team as Cliff slaps him on the shoulder, "Food a little too spicy for ya there, D Wright?"
#18 - Speed
The third base coach is waving him in and he can feel his heartbeat in his head as he pushes his legs to the limit; and when Jose slides into home head first he lays there for a moment almost unable to believe what he just did, an in the park home run.
#19 - Wind
"We should take a drive out east on the island one day," David suggests as he sits between Jose's legs, "sneak onto some beach after dark, smell the ocean breeze," he tilts his head back to rest on Jose's shoulder, "fuck 'til the sun comes up."
#20 - Freedom
David always would talk about being young and being free and all the perks that came along with that life, and while Jose agreed with him it was always the thing that held him back from asking David where exactly they stood.
#21 - Life
A glint in his eye and the words "What's the point of life if you don't live it?" is all that Jose needs to do in order to talk David into doing pretty much anything, including sex in the shower room of the clubhouse.
#22 - Jealousy
Jose gladly accepts another shot, especially if Lo Duca is paying for this round, as he continues to pretend he doesn't see David talking to a curvy blonde at the other end of the bar.
#23 - Hands
David's hands are quick and demanding, twisting at clothes and grabbing hard at skin, and Jose does little to fight back, letting himself be taken over.
#24 - Taste
They say that New York is home to the best Chinese food in the country, but Jose realizes he doesn't really care what it tastes like because there isn't anything else he'd rather be doing then sitting here with David on his couch at 3am eating pork fried rice.
#25 - Devotion
They lay chest to chest, limbs entangled with each other and the bed sheets; Jose is about to fall asleep when he hears David's voice break the silence, "There isn't anyone one else, you know that right?"
#26 - Forever
As much as they liked to talk about playing for the Mets for the rest of their careers, they knew there was no such thing as forever in baseball, and perhaps it was better if they just didn't think that far ahead.
#27 - Blood
As Jose watched David's sleeping form he knew that he was more then just his friend or his lover, he was his brother, his blood.
#28 - Sickness
David stops kissing him and suddenly has a look on his face as if he were about to be sick, his stare on something in the direction of the door, "Shit."
#29 - Melody
Their teammate leaves the otherwise empty storage room quickly, not wanting to hear an explanation for what he saw; the only sound now is the distance beat of music coming from the clubhouse.
#30 - Star
Day games bring more kids to the park and Jose can't help but notice how many of them have the numbers 5 and 7 on their backs.
#31 - Home
David avoids his gaze as he slings his bag over his shoulder, "Perhaps I should sleep at my own place tonight."
#32 - Confusion
Jose will never understand why soccer isn't more popular in America, why more alcohol in the morning can help get rid of a hangover, why he could never fall asleep on plane rides, or why something that feels so right can be seen by the world as something so wrong.
#33 - Fear
Standing in Jose's doorway is the rain drenched form of a man who's eyes look burnt with tears, "I-I can't sleep. Not without you next to me. And I'm sick and fucking tired of being scared of that fact. Because," his voice cracking, "because I love you."
#34 - Lightning/Thunder
David is propped up by pillows against the headboard as Jose leans back onto his chest, neither one speaking, and the room is dark save for the frequent cracks of lightning.
#35 - Bonds
Cliff's hand is heavy on his shoulder, the look on his face serious and understanding, and without words he gets the message: they're teammates, there for each other always, and no matter what happens behind close doors nothing will ever break that.
#36 - Market
He thinks of when baseball was only an empty lot with his friends and garbage can lids for bases and he vows to himself it will never become just about contracts, sponsorships, and free agent markets.
#37 - Technology
"You better be careful what you say to me, you know. I could always write something mean about you in my blog." David says with a playful smile as he lays back with his laptop on Jose's hotel room bed.
#38 - Gift
Jose is pretty sure that David's eyes are the exact same tan brown color as his very first baseball glove that he got for his birthday one year, and he wonders whatever happened to that old thing.
#39 - Smile
"Jose Bernabe Reyes, you may quite possibly have the best smile I have ever seen."
#40 - Innocence
There was no joy more pure then the one he felt that night as his teammates doused each other with champagne, being the first team of 2006 to clinch.
#41 - Completion
"October baseball in New York," David says as he wraps his arms around him from behind, for they're safe now back in Jose's apartment, "this is what we've been dreaming about, and we're finally going to do it," he kisses him on the back of the neck, "together."
#42 - Clouds
Lingering in front of his locker, he wonders if those rain clouds he saw on his way to the Stadium will cause the first game of their series to be delayed or even canceled, and as he looks over to where some of his teammates are watching ESPN he could see the words "Breaking News" flash across the screen.
#43 - Sky
Jose knew he wasn't the only one dreading the flight to St. Louis, that he wasn't the only one who would much rather stay right there on solid ground.
#44 - Heaven
There's alcohol running through him, a fire within him, David above him, game six behind them, game seven and the World Series ahead of them, and to Jose (in this moment, in his bed) everything is perfect.
#45 - Hell
Sports reporters swarm the clubhouse and Jose can see from a distance that David is doing all he can to just put together a sentence that doesn't involve a string of curse words, and all he wants to do is to go over there and somehow save him but he can't move due to the crowd of cameras around his own locker with their hot lights burning down onto his skin.
#46 - Sun
The October sun hangs lower in the sky, bringing the night sooner and betraying the warmth of summer.
#47 - Moon
The October moon shines full in they sky, casting a yellow-orange glow across the New York City streets.
#48 - Waves
Jose can see the ocean from his home in the Dominican; the waves crash slowly onto the shore like a ticking clock, counting down the weeks, days, hours, minutes, seconds until his friend finally makes the plane trip down.
#49 - Hair
David agrees that January here is much nicer then January in Virginia as he runs his hand through his salt-water-wet hair.
#50 - Supernova
Jose has dreams of a double play between a third baseman and a shortstop, a play that brings the last two outs of the last game of the 2007 season; and he sees himself throwing his mit in the air and running to David as the rest of the team comes charging out of the dugout, and, in front of a full house at Shea, kissing him because, fuck it, they're World Series Champs and there is a fire between them that burns brighter then any star in the heavens.
