Top 7 Assignment Chapter 10

Section One

Jefferson wanted to be more democratic. To be democratic means ensuring all people have equal rights.

Federalists were a minority. Jefferson said that they had "equal rights, which equal laws must protect."

Jefferson believed in an idea called laissez faire. It means that the government shouldn’t play a large role in economic affairs.

Jefferson hated the Sedition Acts. He also asked congress to change the Alien Acts, so that it would be back to the old law, of foreign-born people to have to wait only 5 years to become citizens.

The writers of the Constitution believed in balance. They wanted to Court’s power to balance out the powers of the President and Congress.

In Maybury vs. Madison, the Supreme Court set a precedent. It was that the Court had the power to declare if a law was unconstitutional.

Jefferson believed in freedom. He tried to reduce the role that the government plays in the people’s day-to-day lives.

Section Two

The Pinckney Treaty meant that Spain agreed to let American’s ship their goods down the Mississippi River and store them. The treaty helped settle border disputes in Florida.

African slaves fought for their freedom in Haiti. Toussaint L’Ouverture led them.

Jefferson said the Constitution let the President make treaties. At his request, Senate approved a treaty for the Louisiana Purchase.

In 1804, Lewis and Clark went up the Missouri River from St. Louis. Their trip took them all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

Sacajawea was staying with the Mandans. She accompanied Lewis and Clark as a translator.

Lewis and Clark crossed the Continental Divide. It is a mountain ridge that separates rivers flowing in opposite directions.

From 1805 to 1807, Zebulon Pike explored. He traveled through the upper Mississippi River.

Section Four

Shawnee leaders Tecumseh and his brother "The Prophet" wanted to keep settlers from taking Native lands.

Indians depended on traded goods. They thought going back to their old ways would give them strength to drive the white settlers off their lands.

William Henry Harrison was the governor of Indiana. He admitted that Tecumseh was a genius.

Tecumseh had much success. However, rivalries among Native Americans kept him from uniting all the Indians.

"The Prophet" led a surprise attack at night on Harrison’s troops. Although neither side won a clear victory, the white men still celebrated the Battle of Tippecanoe as a win.

The war with the Natives made American relations with the British worse. The British supplied the Natives with guns and ammunition.

In 1811, America and Britain came close to war. Small battles broke out among the countries.

Section Five

The British Navy blocked American ports. That was to stop American’s from trading with other countries.

The American Declaration of War took the British by surprise. They became locked in a struggle with Napoleon.

In 1813, Americans set out to win Lake Erie. Captain Oliver Hazard Perry had no fleet, so he built his own ships.

During the Battle of Lake Erie, the British battered Perry’s own ship. They then left it helpless.

British troops marched into Washington D.C. They burned the White House, and other important buildings.

Andrew Jackson took command of the American troops. He won the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.

In 1814, British ships sailed into Chesapeake Bay. American troops came from Washington D.C., and the two forces clashed at Blandensburg, Maryland.
