VARSITY GIRLS HAVE GOOD SHOWING THIS WEEKEND
The Lexington Girl’s Soccer team had a good weekend this past weekend finishing ninth out of the 24 team field at the Taco Bell Viking Cup hosted by Spring Valley High School. In a preseason tournament that featured the best squads in the state from AAA and AAAA, the Lady ’Cats fared well. On Thursday night the Wildcats bested AAA #6 ranked Brookland-Cayce in a thrilling match 4-3. Freshman Jessica Marshall opened up the scoring off of an assist from Freshman Kira Campbell, only to have it answered with 2 goals from the Lady Bearcats. With only 10 minutes left in the game and the Lady ‘Cats on the wrong end of a 2-1 score, things look bleak. Then Marshall again found the back of the Brookland-Cayce net this time with Sophomore Ashley Otto providing the assist. It appeared that Lexington had sealed the win when, with five minutes left, Junior Shannon Bigbie was fouled in the box and Campbell pushed the penalty kick past the Bearcat goalkeeper. However, that was just the beginning of the fireworks as B-C answered with a breakaway goal of their own. Then with just over one minute left Campbell stepped up again and found Junior Sarah Moon open on the right side. Moon fired a beautiful 25 yard shot over an outstretched goalie into the upper 90 of the goal to seal the Lady ‘Cats victory. Lexington then fell to eventual Viking Cup Champion Fort Mill by a 4-0 count in their Saturday morning match. They were able to bounce back for a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon over #2 ranked and defending State Champion Wando. In the victory Moon sent a corner kick across the goal box that Sophomore Caite Upton fielded and sent to the goal, only to have it deflected by the Wando goalkeeper. When the goalie could not control it Sophomore Ali Steele broke through the Wando line and fought off three defenders to poke in the game winner midway through the second half. The Lady ‘Cats’ defense then stiffened led by Steele, Junior Parrish Behles, Junior Sam Decker and Freshman goalkeeper Hollie Easterbrook to seal the victory.
everything is just great!
