Nick was startled awake as he felt something sharp poke him in the chest. He blinked a few times trying to make his contacts less cloudy and rubbed his eyes. It was then he remembered why he had woken up and he let his hands fall back to his lap as he found Greg looking at him. He looked at the card sitting in his lap then looked back up. He paused. "That really hurt."
Greg's bruised face broke into a small smile, and he attempted to reply, but it just sent him into a fit of coughing. Once he had regained his composure, he glanced at Nick again. "Sorry." He croaked.
"Jesus." Nick muttered scooting his chair to the very edge of the bed. "Here." He reached over and grabbed the glass of water which sat waiting, and handed it over to the younger man. "How are you feeling." He then cirnged. Obviously a stupid question.
Greg smiled weakly again and took the water gratefully, sipping it down as fast as his dry throat would allow. When he placed the cup back on the bedside table, he noticed that his right wrist had a plaster cast on it. "Never better." He said in reply to Nick's question, his voice soft and rasping. He looked around the hospital room now, trying to take everything in. It was a slow process. Turning back to face Nick, Greg began to speak. "How long have I...?" Yet he was finding difficulty in finishing his sentences, so he just trailed off.
Nick walked into the waiting room and found Grissom. "You can go see him now. I'm gonna go home for a little while." He tried to work out the tight muscle in his neck. "Can you tell him i'll stop by before I go for my shift?"
Grissom looks up from his years old magazine to see Nick, looking more tired than he'd ever seen him. "Thanks Nick. You need to get some sleep. I'll make sure he knows you'll be back."
Grissom gave him a pat on the back, a friendly gesture. "Take care of yourself. I'll stay here with Greg until you return. He can't be alone right now." Grissom nods gravely, and shuffles down the hall, shooting one glance over his shoulder at Nick and a small smile. He enters Greg's room, and softly closes the door.
"How are you doing, Greg? Need anything? Nick is going to go home for a bit, but he'll be back before shift starts. I'll stay here with you until he gets back." Grissom knows he's babbling, but he can't help it. He hates hospitals, especially when one of his friends is in residence there.
Greg smiled at his boss from his hospital bed. "Hey Griss." He croaked, looking dazedly up at his boss. Coughing a bit, he added, "I'm just peachy. How are you?"
"Worried sick about you." Grissom states bluntly. "We are going over all the evidence from the scene. You shouldn't be brought up on charges. It was self defense, and so far that is what the board is saying. So you just get some rest, get better. We miss you."
Grissom takes the water off the tray and holds it for Greg to sip from. "Your throat doesn't sound too good. Did they give you anything for it?"
