I put iTunes on shuffle and decided to write a fic around the song that came up. The song was
About a Girl" by The Academy Is. I posted this in comments at
cookleta_etc, so I figured that I might as well post it in my journal.
So Cook really can't believe that he's fallen head over heels in love with David Archuleta. It's a little ridiculous because Cook's a big hot-shot, wannabe, rocker, and Archie plays the piano, which Cook doesn't find very rock and roll at all, but Archie isn't really rock and roll to begin with, and Cook actually kind of likes that.
He'd bumped into the kid at the local music store after he barged into one of the back music rooms to try out a new Gibson. The kid turns around from the keyboard he's trying out and looks up at him with these eyes that Cook is pretty sure could stop wars and create world peace. Cook is also pretty sure that these are not his thoughts and definitely not his heart that feels like it's flipping somersaults in his chest.
Cook never did believe in love at first sight, but he's seriously reconsidering right now based on the fact alone that he kind of can't breathe, which means he really likes this kid or is maybe dying. Cook bets on the former because he also feels kind of lightheaded and giddy and pretty much like a 12 year old Jonas Brothers fan.
He's a little tonuge-tied too, which is weird for him, and he's pretty sure that he says hi or something along those lines because the kid is introducing himself as David and telling Cook that he can call him "Archie." Cook's not sure what he says to the kid for the next few minutes, but he's aware that he makes Archie laugh, and that Archie has this cute, little giggle that Cook has decided he's already in love with. So in the end, Cook invites Archie to his band's show at The Loft that night, and Cook is pretty sure his band doesn't play Archie's style of music, but Archie says yes anyway.
====
Cook wanders through the venue before their set, and he tells himself that he's not looking for Archie, but he knows he's lying to himself. By the time their set starts, Cook still hasn't seen Archie, and that bums him out because he realizes that he should have asked for the kid's number.
So they're already two songs into the set, and Cook's in the zone up on stage being the big, bad rocker he is and totally redeeming himself for his embarrassing actions that day. He opens his eyes in the middle of "Searchlights" and notices Archie pushing his way through the small crowd to stand right in front of him. Cook can't help but make eye contact with him and sing to Archie about falling forever with no end in sight, which he hopes doesn't creep the kid out. So Cook keeps singing to Archie, and by the time his band's set is over, he's pretty sure he's given Archie his own personal concert.
====
Cook hurries off the stage and tells Archie to wait for him as he leaves to help his band pack up their instruments out back. After doing the fastest instrument load he's ever done, he almost kills himself trying to run back inside to keep Archie from waiting. He finds Archie still waiting for him in the exact same spot, and Archie won't stop raving about how awesome he was, and he won't stop staring at Cook like he's an actual big hot-shot rocker and not just some guy in a semi-popular local band.
So Cook can't help it when he drags Archie to the band's area backstage and kisses him soundly right on the mouth. They've been kissing for a while, and Cook is pretty sure that Archie should be freaking out by now, but he actually seems to be okay, and the only person actually freaking out is Cook's guitarist, Neal. That doesn't really surprise him though because he's pretty sure he's never mentioned to Neal that he may or may not be into guys.
Cook finally runs out of breath and ends the kiss, pulling Archie into a disgustingly sweaty hug. Cook can't help but think: to be loved... what more could you ask for?
