gas is about 2.98 here =0

I think it's probably that high because the govenor gave the state a temporary gas tax relief type deal, taking about 15 cent/gallon off of the consumer puchase price, after the mini gas crisis we had after Katrina. Sadly, it's only to the end of September, I wish it would last longer, haha.
