actually if you would have done your research, extending one's middle finger in a photograph has always been popular among adolescents.

but if 1997 you meant the year the trend peaked, you were mistaken for the year 1999, in which the Kid Rock album was released, with the infamous middle finger of one Kid Rock printed on the actual compact disc.
