The US is the country where the gap between rich and poor classes is the widest in the developped world.
And the city of Washington (besides not being the wealthiest of the country) looks much less hypocrite than many others. I mean, Pinochet had ordered Santiago's slums to be hidden by colorful walls for the Papal visit and he took that trick from Montréal mayor Jean Drapeau (1955-1984) which didn't want the tourists to see poverty or "depravation" (crackdowns on gay bars and prostitutes as well) for the 1967 World Fair and 1976 Summer Olympics.
Anyway, that is not less than criminal for a society to let some of its members to be poor.
