the only thing that i can find in which most people (excluding very devout catholics or the very anti-religious, since they'd obviously be biased sources), some may say the pope (John Paul II) helped bring down the USSR...i think that's a load of crap, but many people out there will fight to the death to defend that belief

50 years ago? more like 500. The papacy just got around to pardoning Galileo in 1992 (for the heretical notion that the Earth revolves around the Sun, heaven forbid!).

My view on the pope (or any pope) anonymous March 29 2005, 23:01:04 UTC
Historically the figure of the pope (any pope) was of most importance!

Today, the figure of the pope (as the catholic church leader) is still very important, if nothing else because of the number of Catholic’s around the world.

Personally, I think that anyone that denies importance of any world leader is plain ignorance!

I rather not comment about this particular pope - as a good or bad pope, because I believe that only history will judge his term. However I have human sympathy for him.

FYI - I was raised catholic, yet I don't practice and I am a believer that all religions are spiritually rich when in moderation!

He's the face of the "true" catholic religion... so the world has a pure iconic figure to look at and see the good in the religion... instead of assuming all catholics are religious nut jobs, since they're the only ones you would otherwise notice.
