This morning I was sitting in the Barnes & Noble cafe and there were two Italian women (possibly a mother & daughter) talking to each other. A few minutes later, I looked up and realized that they were both weeping. I've no idea why because they were exclusively speaking Italian

I agree completely.. yet find myself still saying 'good' or more grammatically correct 'well' to avoid further conversation.

Nope, I never found out what was going on.
But I think you do bring up a good point. If you don't want to talk to someone, sometimes the only response to get them to leave you alone is, "I'm good."

Not many people pick up on the et cetera et cetera, life goes on endlessly, it's all a big pattern thing... which I think you get.
