i read a college tip book and it said that you make 'temporary quick' friends in the first few weeks of school, before activities start, cuz you're just thrown in with people and you basically hang out with whoever lives near you/has class with you. DO NOT DESPAIR!!! AND I LOVE YOU ICON!!! i hope that makes you feel better. :)
