i guess i agree with what she said about being there for him without being a doormat.
but the best thing in my opinion would be to keep yourself from being too accessible. if he thinks he can just call on you any time he's upset, then he will. and god knows that's not good for you to have to deal with. you know?

also, did you tell him how outrageous his comment about god was?
