Although hydrogen and helium are the most common elements found in the universe, carbon comes in a fairly high ranking as well, being the third most common element. Most carbon originates in stars. After stars expand into red giants, they convert from helium into carbon to maintain a viable energy flow. The reason we find so much carbon on ( Read more... )

Few weeks? Try a few years. These are, of course, in galaxies far, far away -- but yes, you're right, the planet is circling closer than Mars circles our own sun. The star is, indeed, a Supergiant, which is why it was so difficult for scientists to notice the orbit of the star. Supergiants emit a lot of gases and from photographs it appears that the planet is just a tiny speck among all the emitted gas. Binary stars, of course, leave trails...I forget what this is called, but gases from the bigger star will be picked up by the littler star, thus forming a sort of rope between the two stars.

Oops, hit "post" before I could add this...the reason we can tell these planets are planets instead of stars is because of the "wobble" (I kid you not, this is what scientists classify it as) they make as they orbit their central star.

A kiss on the hand may be quite continental
but diamonds are a girl's best friend.
...
Men grow cold as girls grow old
and we all lose our charms in the end.
But square-cut or pear-shaped
these rocks don't lose their shape
Diamonds are a girl's best friend
...Tiffany's ... Cartier...
Talk to me, Harry, Winston, tell me all about it!
...
Time rolls on and youth is gone
and you can't straighten up when you bend
but stiff back or stiff knees
you stand straight at Tiffany's
Diamonds... Diamonds...
- I don't mean rhinestones -
but Diamonds, Are A Girl's Best Friend
