"Kiss"
Chapter Ten and previous

Chapter Eleven

“Bam, I’d like you to meet the Helsinki vampires.”

Intense light flooded the area around them as the door was opened from within, the buzz of rock music ringing from somewhere in the distance. Bam tried to peer around Ville to see who was standing in the doorway, but all he could see was a mass of black hair. The man exchanged a few words with Ville in a language that Bam didn’t recognize before ushering them inside, giving the skater his first peek at sheer royalty.

The vestibule of the castle was massive in comparison to most, stretching what seemed to be miles to the top floor. A large chandelier hung from the roof, softly lighting the small room but managing to bring out all of the hidden shadows at the same time. In front of them sat a long winding staircase made out of what Bam presumed to be ox blood wood and cherry granite. Large Fleur de Lis were carved into the banister of the railing, winding all the way to the top where it was met by a welcoming gas burning iron lantern.

The three men were led into a large sitting room, plush crimson carpeting guiding their way. Once again, Bam stood there shocked. His eyes were drawn to the large ceilings, gold leaf walls glittering in the dim light of the massive fire place. On the opposite side of the room stood a great stain glass window, the images of Christ’s crucifixion reenacted in vibrant colors. The scene seemed to almost be a mockery of the situation.

Stepping around Ville to get a better glance at the room, Bam’s eyes finally fell on the owner of the house. He was expecting to find a man of great taste and extravagance, but standing before him was a man dressed all in black leather, raven hair falling to his shoulders in slightly wavy rivulets. A few strands of black hair blocked the man’s eyes from view, casting an almost ethereal look over his appearance. The skater noticed that this man was rather than, more-so than he was expecting, at least. Bam didn’t even realize that he was staring.

“Bam, this is Jyrki,” Ville spoke softly behind him, placing an encouraging hand on his shoulder. Bam’s head snapped up in acknowledgement, quickly nodding as he stuck out a hand in greeting.

Jyrki didn’t take it though; rather he just brushed a few strands of hair from his face and nodded, giving Bam a startling glimpse at deep grey eyes. He saw Ville cast the dark man a disapproving look, and almost reluctantly Jyrki stuck out a skull glove clad hand.

“A Misfits fan, huh?” Bam asked, trying to lighten the mood a bit. He didn’t receive an answer; Jyrki promptly turned around and began walking deeper into the room. Bam watched as he took a seat in one of the many red leather chairs that scattered the room.

“Jyrki, darling, why so negative this fine evening?” Ville asked flirtatiously, strutting across the room only to drape himself across the man’s lap. Bam tried to ignore the pang of jealousy that he felt and followed Linde’s lead toward a nearby couch.

“You have no right butting into my business,” he growled angrily, the noise causing Bam to jump slightly. However, he settled his nerves when he noticed that it didn’t garner a response from either of the two men he arrived with. “What the hell do you think you’re doing here, anyway?”

“What? Can’t a vampire visit his friends anymore?” A look of faux disappointment crossed Ville’s face before he was hastily shoved from Jyrki’s lap, landing on the floor with a resounding thud. For a second Bam was taken aback, never expecting someone to gain the upper hand on the eloquent vampire. But when Ville merely shrugged and found another seat, he decided to let the situation slide.

They sat there for a moment, only the crackling fire place breaking the silence, before Bam began to fidget in his seat. He felt so out of place here. Leaning his weight into Linde, who was still sitting beside him on the couch, he whispered as silently as he could, “Is he a vampire, too?”

Despite his attempts to keep quiet, Jyrki’s eyes snapped in Bam’s direction, fire practically flying from his grey orbs. Gulping down the lump in his throat, Bam bowed his head in apology and returned to fiddling with the hem of his sleeve.

“Well you surely didn’t think I was alone in this world, dear Bammi,” Ville’s voice suddenly broke through the silence, a slight, biting laugh to his words. “Of course he’s a vampire. Did I not already make that clear?”

“Oh,” Bam whispered, unsure of what else he could say. “Yeah, I forgot about that.”

“You better pay more attention next time,” Jyrki growled, standing from his seat and sauntering over to the fireplace.

“Don’t mind him, he’s just in one of his moods,” Ville smiled. “Jyrki, dear, tell me what’s on your mind.”

The irritated vampire didn’t grace the room with a response. Instead they watched as his eyes traveled back to the foyer, where Bam realized a man was standing. A man, or perhaps another vampire? Bam couldn’t be too sure. A squeak of excitement fell from Ville’s lips as he quickly stood from his spot and rushed over to the man, wrapping thin arms around his neck and pulling him into a tight hug. Black hair stuck out in a million directions (a botched attempt at liberty spikes, Bam assumed), two strips framing the man’s face perfectly. Shirtless, Bam got a view of beautiful tan skin and well sculpted muscles, a pair of low riding leather pants practically painted on the man’s legs. Again Bam found himself gulping, but this time to try and squelch the arousal he was feeling.

“Jussi, I knew you would be here!” Ville screeched, clasping the man’s hand in his own and practically dragging him into the room. He paraded the man known as Jussi before him, excited when eyeliner rimmed blue orbs connected with Bam’s. “Bammi, I’d like you to meet Jussi, another of the vampires that inhabit this house.”

Jussi smiled bashfully down at the young boy before he spotted Jyrki standing by the fireplace. Without a formal greeting, he walked up to the vampire and placed an affectionate kiss on his cheek. It was like turning on a light switch. Bam watched with wide eyes as the men launched into a passionate kiss, Jyrki tugging the new man down into the chair in which he previously sat. The mood seemed to be lightened then, Jussi now sitting atop Jyrki’s lap while Ville claimed a seat next to Bam.

A million questions raced through Bam’s head, but he was far too afraid to voice them aloud. After the response he recently got from Jyrki, he was contemplating staying silent for the remainder of the evening. A nudge to his shoulder told him that Ville was reading his thoughts, but he ignored it and continued to stare around the room. It was really quite immaculate.

“So what’s on the roster for tonight, boys?” Ville’s voice once more cut through the silence. Bam was beginning to think that the vampire had a small case of ADD as Ville pulled his legs under him and leaned forward on the couch anxiously.

“Actually, Ville, you and I have some business to attend to,” Jyrki took a suspicious glance around the room, his eyes falling on Bam before he added, “privately.”

A light bulb seemed to flash above Ville’s head as his eyes snapped to the vampire, a solemn grin spreading across his face. “Oh, right…business. Shall we talk, then?”

There was a collective nod from the three vampires as they stood and left the room quietly, Bam watching them close the door silently behind them before turning to Linde. He suddenly realized that the blonde hadn’t spoken a word since their arrival.

“Where are they going?”

Linde shrugged slightly, turning his body to face him. “Who knows? I’m never a part of their affairs.” Bam picked up on the almost disenchanted look that clouded Linde’s eyes. “But we might as well make the most of this time.”

The blonde stood from the couch and walked over to a fully stocked bar that Bam had managed to miss on his first view of the room. Pouring to glasses of brandy, he returned to Bam’s side and offered him the drink.

“Are you sure we should be drinking this?” He asked as he took the glass. “I mean, it’s not ours…”

“Don’t worry about it, I’m sure they have enough money to buy some more.”

They clinked their glasses together, the dark liquid coming dangerously close to spilling over the rim, and took a quick swig at the same time. The brandy burned Bam’s throat going down, but he tried not to show it in fear of looking like a pussy. As Linde sat back down, Bam figured that it was a good time to voice a few of his questions.

“So uhm…exactly how many vampires live here?” He asked quietly, still afraid that Jyrki would come crashing through the room and give him another angry stare-down.

“Only five in all,” Linde responded quickly, the answer coming to him without much thought. “But I believe Jussi and Jyrki are the only two here tonight.”

Only five vampires? In such a large castle? Bam couldn’t help but imagine how peaceful it must be to have so much space to oneself. “And…ah, this may be a strange question…but are they…together?”

“Who? Jyrki and Jussi?” At Bam’s sheepish nod Linde continued. “I suppose you could say that. They’re destined to spend an eternity together, so they might as well be affectionate.”

“What do you mean?”

“Jyrki sired Jussi,” Linde smiled. It was obvious by the look on Bam’s face that he had no clue what the blonde man was talking about. “He was the one who turned Jussi into a vampire.”

“Oh.” Bam found it amazing how easily these answers were coming to Linde, as if the concept of vampires and siring were an ordinary event. And, Bam assumed, to him they must be. “But why do they have to spend eternity together?”

“So many questions,” Linde laughed slightly, but smiled approvingly and answered the question anyway. “There’s a bond that connects a vampire to his sire. A very strong one. I’m not really sure what it is, but I do know that as long as the sire lives, the fledgling will be at his side.”

Bam wanted to ask about Ville’s sire, wanted to know why he hasn’t seen another vampire at his side. But he didn’t. It felt almost as if by asking that question he would be crossing the line over to personal space where he knew better than to trek. The silence between them grew, though, and he was desperate for anything to say. Just as Bam opened his mouth, intent on babbling of a bit of nonsense, a large crash from the next room over broke through the silence, quickly followed by a slew of angry curse words.

“What the hell was that?”

From the corner of his eyes he saw Linde shrug, but before the blonde could say anything the door swung open, crashing against the adjacent wall. Ville stormed into the room, Jyrki hot on his tail as they continued to argue in that strange language. All Bam could do was stare.

Suddenly the words turned to English, Jyrki roughly shoving Ville from behind and pointing an accusing finger in his face. “How dare you bring another of those filthy humans into my home?”

“How dare you tell me who I am to associate with?” Ville retorted angrily. Without warning Jyrki shoved Ville again, this time with enough force to send him hurtling into a nearby chair.

Linde quickly stood from his spot but didn’t take a step forward, too afraid to get between the two disputing vampires. Bam watched as Jyrki continued to scream in Ville’s face in words that he didn’t understand, words that Linde did and that made Ville’s confident façade crumble in an instant. A loud slap echoed throughout the room as Ville mumbled something under his breath, his face pushed roughly to the side and a red welt forming on his pale cheek.

“I think we’ve had enough,” Linde finally piped in, tugging Bam’s sleeve in order to get him to stand. The skater stood on shaky legs, unsure of what to do. Sticking close behind Linde, but far enough so that he wouldn’t get in the way, he stood silently as the blonde hoisted Ville up with one strong arm and led him toward the door. “Listen Jyrki, I don’t know what you guys are fighting about this time, but let it go for now. We’re going home.”

Ville wrenched his arm free from Linde’s grasp, growling something out in the strange language before stalking off toward the front exit. Bam followed him outside, staying quiet as he shuffled his feet. What the hell had just happened?

He waited until they were once again situated in the car, Ville again draped over Bam’s lap but this time lacking any of the flirtatious confidence he held earlier, before Bam decided to ask his question.

“What happened back there?”

The engine revved and Linde peeled out of the driveway, speeding down the road faster than Bam remembered. On top of him Ville’s body tensed, his shoulders arching slightly as he stared out the window.

“None of your business,” he grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest. Letting out a low sigh, Bam tried to let the subject drop. If Ville wanted to talk about it, he would.

The drive back downtown was spent in silence, none of the car’s occupants daring to make a sound. As the car reclaimed its rightful spot in the parking garage the three of them piled out and headed for the large building next door. Bam’s heart was beating a mile a minute, both from fear and concern for the vampire standing beside him. Something had obviously gone down at the castle, and whatever it was Ville was unwilling to talk about it.

The loft was quiet as Linde slid the key into the lock and opened the door, Ville quickly storming off to his room and slamming the door behind him. The sound of things being thrown around quickly followed, and Bam found himself staring at the door unsure of what to do.

“Try not to let it get to you,” Linde said beside him, leaning against the doorframe. “Shit like this happens all the time. He’ll get over it in an hour or so.”

Despite the promising words from the blonde, Bam wasn’t so sure. Something in Ville’s eyes really scared him, and he was determined to find out what was going on. Tentatively knocking on the door, half afraid of being turned away and half afraid of what he might find on the other side, Bam shifted his weight from one foot to the other and waited for it to open.

It seemed as if he stood there for hours, his hands growing sweaty with anticipation as Linde took his leave somewhere in the large suite. But finally the door opened, slightly jerked but measured at the same time.

“What do you want?” Ville growled angrily, only opening the door enough to peek his head through.

“I…uhm,” Bam stammered, trying to peer around Ville and into the room. Ville noticed this and moved to slam the door again, but before he could Bam put his hand up and stopped it. “I was just wondering if…you know….you needed somebody to talk to.”

“No,” he answered curtly, again trying to slam the door in Bam’s face. But once more it didn’t work, this time Bam pushed it all the way open and stepped inside.

“Well, too bad, because that’s exactly what you’re going to do.”

Ville seemed taken aback for a moment, never before having seen Bam take the upper hand in a situation. Shrugging slightly, an exasperated sigh escaping his lips, he moved to sit down on a bed that looked as if it never got any use. It was then that Bam noticed the fully packed suitcase that lay on top. “What do you want to talk about?”

Eyeing the suitcase, he asked, “Going somewhere?”

“Maybe.”

“Take me with you.” It was more of a statement than a request, and Bam smiled when the vampire gave him a quizzical look. Ville’s answer, though, wasn’t what the skater was expecting.

“No.”

“What do you mean ‘no’?” Bam suddenly exploded, the harsh tone of his voice causing Ville to shrink back slightly. “There’s something going on, I just know it! And you drag me into your life and expect me to not give a shit about this?”

There was a pause as Ville tried to think of the right thing to say. Finally, he sighed and said, “What do you want me to say?”

“I want you to say that you’ll take me with you.” When Ville didn’t answer, Bam continued with a smirk. “Besides, if you don’t take me, I’ll just follow you around and annoy the hell out of you.”

The slight bite of humor made Ville laugh, something Bam wasn’t expecting but made him smile nonetheless. “I’m just a little stressed. Besides, it’s too close to dawn to go anywhere now. I guess we can leave tomorrow night.”

“We? So you mean I can come?” A sense of excitement that Bam hadn’t felt since he was young burst through his soul, causing him to jump up and down slightly on the balls of his feet.

“Yes,” Ville laughed. “You may come.”

Not what you were expecting Jyrki, no? Sorry, guys. But it was planned from the begining...

A/N: Also, I know that most of you (or, some of you) were probably expecting an update to "Crawling Backwards", seeing as I like to post chapters in intervals, but C.B. is giving me a bit of trouble right now and people were begging for the next chapter of this. No worries, "Crawling Backwards" is not being abandoned. I'm just trying to work out a few kinks.♥
