Chapter 3 “Surprise!”
Waking up groggily he whimpered slightly. He hadn’t slept well. In fact, he had hardly slept at all. He had been plagued by nightmares all night. Rolling over the face the door, he looked above it to the clock. Seven AM… well, he was awake now, so he might as well get up. He glanced over at Jesse to see if he was awake yet, but he wasn’t. He was curled up in a little ball shivering and half covered. He picked up the covers and placed them all the way up to Jesse’s neck and tucked them in. He watched him as he slowly stopped shivering and then walked over to the door. Opening it quietly he heard someone pacing just outside in the hall.
“Mrs. Paikkala?”
“Oh, Ville, I’m so sorry, did I wake you?”
“No.”
“Good,” she smiled softly. “Come on, let’s go get you something to eat. Is Jesse awake?”
He shook his head.
“Well then follow me.” She began to walk back to the Kitchen. “Ville? Do you mind if I ask you a question?” She looked back and saw him shake his head again. “You boys haven’t been here in ages… why didn’t you come to visit? It just wasn’t like your mother to not visit and not tell me why.”
“S-she was sick and the people took away our phone…”
“I see.” She said sadly. She covered her mouth and sniffled. “Oh I’m so sorry, look at me! Crying when I am supposed to be feeding you and look at you! The strong little soldier who hasn’t yet shed a tear. Such a brave little boy! Oh come here!” She cried and opened her arms to him again. He hugged her tightly. He wanted to cry, he really wanted to cry, but the tears didn’t fall. They refused to come to his eyes.
“You know that I would keep you both here forever if I could, don’t you? You both are just as much my sons as Erkki. And you know that Kaveli would love to have you here, and Erkki! Erkki would be thrilled to have you two as brothers, but I just don’t think we can. Oh… well we’ll see what happens.” She sniffled again and dried her tears. “Well, what would you like to eat then?
Ville just shrugged, indicating that he didn’t know and didn’t really care as long as he ate something.
“Oatmeal then?” she inquired, but then without waiting for an answer, she set to work getting out the small pot to boil the water in for the three of them. “Jesse doesn’t know about your mother yet does he?”
“No.”
“Are you going to tell him?”
“I don’t know…”
“You’re going to have to eventually you know?”
“I know. But what should I say?”
“That’s up to you sweetheart. I know it will be hard, but you have to do it.”
“I know.” He said sadly.
“Hey, why don’t you go watch some cartoons before breakfast is ready, okei?”
He nodded and walked over to the couch and sat down. After sitting there for a minute, he realized that he needed the remote. He got up and went over to the TV to fetch it. Pressing the power button, the TV jumped to life, startling him slightly. He was then kind of excited! He almost never got to watch TV, but when he did he loved to watch Bugs Bunny. The only problem was that he had no idea what channel it was on. “Umm… Mrs. Paikkala? What channel is Bugs Bunny on?”
“Ville, please call me Liisa, and it is on channel four.”
“Okei, thank you.” He quickly pressed the buttons on the remote. The channel changed at once. Bugs was being chased by Elmer Fudd, rifle in hand. As the show went on, Ville became more animated himself. Giggling and laughing at Bugs’ antics.
While he was watching the show, Liisa snuck away to go wake up Jesse to see if he wanted breakfast. She returned a few minutes later with a sleepy, puffy-faced little boy trailing behind her, rubbing his eye with his tiny fist. She pulled out three bowls and three juice cups from the cabinet above the sink. She spooned out Jesse’s food and asked him what he would like to drink.
“Miwk Please!”
She nodded and went to the refrigerator and grabbed the pint of milk and poured it into his glass and a tiny bit into his bowl. “How much sugar do you like?”
“Umm… a lot!”
She laughed slightly at this and added only two spoonfuls of sugar. “Ville honey, it’s ready now if you would like to eat.” She said, interrupting his concentration on the show. He giggled one last time and then got up and came over to the island and sat next to Jesse. She served him as well and poured orange juice for him. She served herself and stood behind the counter, leaning on the island as she ate quietly, watching these two precious little boys.
She felt terrible for them. They might as well have just lost their whole world, and she felt their pain. Or at least some of it.
The first time she has met Anita; she had been working at the local grocer as a cashier to help cover the cost of Erkki’s frequent doctor visits. Anita came up to her cash register to purchase what was in her little basket. There hadn’t been much there, but after ringing it all up she had discovered that she didn’t have enough money. She looked about to burst into tears when Liisa said she would help pay for it. Noticing that all she had with her was her coin purse and that she was pregnant, she asked how she was planning on getting home.
“I’ll walk, it’s not that far.” Was her response.
She asked someone to go check the temperature outside. Upon hearing that it was far below freezing, she promptly announced that she could not possibly walk home in that weather, no matter how close it was and that she would take her. Anita protested at first, but after realizing that Liisa really wanted to do this for her, she gave up and waited patiently for the few minutes it took for her to lock up her station and tell someone she was leaving.
On the way to her house, she found out a little bit more about her. That she had a four-year-old son waiting for her at home and that her husband had died just 3 months ago. Once they reached her home, she asked what she could do to repay her.
“Come have dinner with my family, say Sunday? And bring your son, Erkki will be glad to have someone to play with for the night. Anita smiled and promised that she would.
From then on, Anita came over every other weekend while Liisa visited her house on the others. Liisa helped her to overcome her grief and she helped Liisa by babysitting Erkki anytime she needed her to. They became like sisters to one another, that close. When Anita stopped visiting, she became concerned. She tried calling her but they never answered the phone and every time she went over to see them they were gone. She caught them home once, but when she asked about it, Anita had just brushed it off as nothing and then had to leave again.
Now, a week later, she was hit with the news of her demise and the sudden burden of two small boys who desperately needed her but that she couldn’t possibly be there for no matter how much she wanted to be.
The rest of the morning went on without much problem accept that Kalevi and Erkki were becoming late and it began to bother her, but at around one thirty that afternoon, she heard the family car drive up and she rushed outside to meet them. She hugged both of them tightly, but said nothing. She didn’t know what to say. So instead she just led them into the house.
When Kalevi saw the boys, his eyes shined with joy. He really loved the both of them as much as his own son. Erkki exploded with laughter and ran over to where they were playing in the middle of the floor with legos. Kalevi turned his eyes to Liisa to ask where Anita was but the smile on his face fell when he saw how exhausted and worried she looked. She looked back at him and hinted that they should go somewhere else and talk, so they left the boys to play and went to the guest room.
