Chapter 4 “The Decision”

“What’s wrong?  Where is Anita?”

“Kalevi… She’s gone.”  Even though she didn’t specify what she meant, by the tone of her voice, he instinctively knew what she meant.  He came over to her and wrapped his arms around her as they sat down on the edge of the bed.  “What are we going to do Kal?  They are all alone now and they need us but we can’t take care of them, what are we going to do?”

He held her tighter and kissed the top of her head.  “I don’t know sweetheart, but we will figure something out.  You are right though, we can’t keep them, and we don’t have enough money as it is.  They are going to turn off the electricity soon if we don’t pay them.”

I know, and neither one of us can work anymore if we want to give Erkki any sort of real attention from us; we need to be here for him.  We can’t afford a babysitter!”

Kalevi sat there in silence for a few moments before he came up with the only choice they had.  He knew that Liisa wouldn’t like it, but it was the only thing they could do.  “Honey, you know there is only one thing we can do, even if we both hate the idea.”

The moment he came up with the idea, she knew what he was thinking.  “No, Kal!  I don’t want to do that to them!  We’ll never see them again!  I went through that when I was young and yes it is true that I came out of that okei, but a lot of the kids I was housed with didn’t!  There has to be something else we can do for them!”

“I wish there was, but I really don’t see any.”  He felt like he was already loosing a part of himself, but he knew it had to be done.

She leaned her head against his shoulder and cried.  He just held her as she cried and tears misted up in his own eyes, but being a typical Finnish man, these tears quickly disappeared.  He hugged her tightly once more and then stood up.  “We have to call someone now.”

“No, please, can’t they stay just a few more days?”  She begged.

“Liisa, we can’t.  Neither one of us are going to be home tomorrow and even though you can take Erkki to work with you, they might fire you if you take in two more children and I can’t take them… there are no kids allowed at all there.  The moment I walk in with them I WILL be fired.”

She put her face in her hands as Kalevi walked out of the room.  After a moment she got up and went to the bathroom to wash her face and then went to check on the boys.  She smiled faintly when she saw that they had already made quite a few little stacks of Legos that looked like buildings and were now playing with smaller stacks that she could only assume were people.  She walked over to where they were playing and gave them all a hug and a kiss.  Erkki and Ville both gave her funny looks, but Jesse just smiled at her and continued to play.

“Liisa?  Could you come here for a minute?”  Kalevi called.  Reluctantly she got up and went to find her husband in their room.  “I’ve looked everywhere through this phonebook here at all of the adds for adoption and this one looks like the best.  Have a look.”  He handed her the book and pointed to a little add halfway down the page.

The Tuoni House.  She had to admit that it was impressive, but she had a bad feeling about it.  Re-reading the page, she ignored the feeling and nodded that he should call the place.

She stayed only long enough to hear that Mrs. Tuoni was coming to pick the boys up in just an hour’s time and them went back to watching them play for the last time until the woman came.

Ville and Erkki had just finished putting away all of the Legos when the doorbell rang.  He watched as Liisa got up and opened the front door letting a tall stern looking woman into the house.  He shivered slightly at the mere sight of and already began to hate her, whoever she was.

Liisa lead the woman into the living room and then just stood there awkwardly.  The woman cleared her throat to get Liisa’s attention back to her as she had been staring at the boys.  Liisa jumped slightly and turned her gaze back to the mean figure before her, “Oh yes, sorry!  Please, take a seat.”  She gestured towards the overstuffed chair on the right side of the couch and after she was seated, went to sit on the end of the couch closest to her.  The woman smiled at her, or at least made an effort to, but the smile didn’t quite reach her eyes.

Everyone in the room sat in silence for a moment, the tension in the air building.  Ville just stared at her.  He really didn’t like her.  Her steal gray hair was pulled back into a tight bun.  It was so tight in fact that it pulled on the skin of her face, distorting her looks slightly and looked painful.  Her icy gray-blue eyes looked angry and bitter.  She was dressed all in black, rather loose clothes in an attempt to hide the slight bulge of her stomach.  Obviously she was a vain woman, but there wasn’t a trace of makeup on her face.

At some point during his observation of her, Jesse had crawled over to him and curled up in his lap.  He held him close as the woman stared back at the both of them.  Oh how he already hated her!  He wanted desperately for her to just do what she came here to do and then go away and leave them alone.  But somehow he knew that that wasn’t going to happen.

Liisa finally broke the silence, “Ville, this is Mrs. Tuoni.  She and her husband are foster parents for orphaned children.  She is going to take you and Jesse home with her okei?  But don’t be scared because I will come to visit you, I promise.”

He didn’t really understand what had just been said, but what did sink in was that this horrible woman, Mrs. Tuoni, was going to take Jesse and himself away from Liisa.  She wanted to take them away form the only bit of the world that was comfortable and safe.

With that out of the way Mrs. Tuoni stood and was ready to take the boys and leave but Liisa wouldn’t let her. “Wait, wait, when do I get to come and see them?”

“Ma’am, I would advise against that, you may become too attached to them and prevent them for getting adopted.”

“I already am attached to them!  They were my best friend’s children and I love them!  When I see them?”

“Then why don’t you just take care of them instead of handing them over to me?”  She asked coldly.  Liisa immediately became quiet.  Standing there for a moment looking down at the still seated Liisa.  “Well?”

“Because… because I can’t.”  She whispered while hating every word as is slipped from her mouth.

An evil smile spread slowly across her face, “then I might as well take them now.  Currently there is no open time for you to come see them so don’t even try.  If there happens to be a good time, I will call to inform you.  Goodbye, Mrs. Paikkala.”  She walked over to the boys and snapped her fingers at them signaling that they needed to stand up and follow her.  Ville slowly stood up and held onto Jesse’s hand.  He glanced back over at Liisa, she already had tears falling down her face, but she nodded to him, silently telling him to follow Mrs. Tuoni.  Mrs. Tuoni cleared her throat again to catch his attention.  He looked back at her cruel expression, bowed his head and slowly took a step towards her.

The moment he moved his foot in her direction she grabbed onto the collar of his shirt and nearly dragged him towards her.  He stumbled trying to regain his rooting, but had already dropped Jesse’s hand in surprise.  Jesse had fallen to the ground and was attempting to get back up, but because he was so tired he just fell back down again.  Mrs. Tuoni scowled at him as he attempted once more to get back on his feet but made no movements to help him.  Ville struggled in her grip to try and get back to his brother, but she held tight to his shirt.  It was now that he wished he had just kept the cold tattered shirt that he had been wearing when he arrived here because it would have ripped, allowing him to get free to help Jesse.  Instead, he himself was helpless and finally gave up when he saw that Jesse was finally standing and walking towards him.  Jesse reached up and took Ville’s hand and then looked up to the horrible woman still holding Ville’s.  He gave her a warm smile that would have melted the hearts of any normal human being, but Mrs. Tuoni was no normal human being, she just looked at him with complete disgust and then turned and walked towards the door, Ville and Jesse being dragged behind her.
