Thin Ice

Momma loves her baby,

When I was young we lived in a nice little house in the county side cliché I know, but true.

It was me, my mom, my dad and Jess my older brother.

Then the war started and my dad left, then it was me, mom, and Jess.

I was too young to really understand the war, but my mom would always tell me and Jess that Daddy was fighting and was going to be a hero.

And I believed her.

And daddy loves you, too.

And the sea may look warm to ya, babe,

Me and Jess used to play for hours on the tire swing my dad put up a week before he left.

It was in a tree on a hill that overlooked the road leading to the house.

That way when he came home we would see him coming up the road.

And the sky may look blue.

But ooooh Baby
Ooooh baby blue
Oooooh babe.

If you should go skating,

We never really thought about him not coming home.

About something bad happening to him.

Because our Mommy said it would be alright and she never lied to us.

On the thin ice of modern life,

Dragging behind you the silent reproach,

I was four when the war started and as I turned five, then six, then seven, then eight, it was still going.

Daddy was a hero, that’s why he wasn’t home, because he was being a hero.

She never lied.

Of a million tear-stained eyes,

Don’t be surprised when a crack in the ice,

Then when I was nine, ten, I started to sense something wasn’t right.

But she told me it was okay.

But Jess knew it too, something was wrong.

We just didn’t know what.

Appears under your feet.

You slip out of your depth and out of your mind,

My mom never even told us when he was killed.

We didn’t find out till later.

Looking back now, I realize how pitiful I was.

How stupid I was not to realize that he was never coming home.

With your fear flowing out from behind you

As you claw the ice.
