“Here’s one, Ville. Off the coast of Malibu, it says. Spacious, luxurious, and very functional.”
Ville paused in his pacing to make a face at Mizee. “Malibu? California? Mizee, we already have to take a fourteen hour flight, and you know how much I hate flying. Let’s stick to the East Coast, shall we?”
“Alright then, you big baby. Coast, Coast, Coast…here, I found one. Tallahassee, Florida, close to the ocean…wow, Ville, look at this. It’s huge…and absolutely gorgeous inside. Great writing environment, right?”
Ville huffed. “But it’s hot there, Mizee. Really, unbearably hot. Can’t you find anywhere else?”
“Ville, if you don’t want to be jetting up and down the coast from studio to studio, that’s our only choice. That one will allow us to use it comfortably for three months, and you know we need that long to allow your eccentric ass to finish writing the album so we can record it.”
Ville pouted, shifting his feet and making little sighing noises.
Mizee sighed himself, closing down the computer and turning in the chair to face the eternal source of his every frustration, a source which at that moment happened to be pacing again, making faces at the floor to stop himself whining again.
“Ville, there is one other option…” Mizee left it at that, allowing Ville to stop his childish silent tantrum to pay attention to him. Truth be told, he really didn’t want to say this but…at this point they had no choice.
Ville’s head popped up and he gave Mizee a curious glance. “There is?”
Mizee swallowed and rubbed the back of his neck, flicking his eyes away from Ville as he said, “…Bam has a studio in his Castle.”
Ville stopped dead in his tracks, blinking at Mizee in shock. “The Castle?” he repeated, almost squeaking the words.
Mizee nodded to the floor, preparing himself for another tantrum. “Yeah, The Castle. It was necessary for his production company, I guess. I hear it’s a really great studio, too. Sound-proofed, well-equipped, and I imagine very comfortable for the bands that use it.” I bet he designed it with you in mind, Mizee added in his head.
Ville shook his head, slumping into one of the many chairs scattered around the room; this room was used for the unofficial band meetings more often than not, and there was always an assortment of places to sit.
“But, Mizee, even if I wanted to, it would never work. I highly doubt Bam would allow us to take over the castle for three months, and even if he did…how would we tell Lily?”
Mizee’s feet wore into the carpet as he kept his eyes down. “Um, actually, Ville, he would. He called a few days ago to suggest just that.”
He rubbed his neck again, feeling more than a little uncomfortable as he added, “As for Lily, well…he trusts you, doesn’t he? Not to mention Bam’s still his friend, and we do need a studio, Ville.”
Ville had stopped listening. His hands were in his hair, fingers massaging his temples as he rested his elbows on his knees. Looking up with green eyes that were trying and failing not to be desperately curious, he asked, “He…he called?”
Mizee swallowed hard more than once, wishing it were anyone but him having to have this conversation with Ville. It was nerve-wracking and tentative and if Ville was still better, could lead to a huge argument between the two of them, an unnecessary argument.
“Yeah, Ville, he called. You know…just because you two didn’t work out that way doesn’t mean your friendship has to be lost in the crossfire.”
“I mean, think about it…if he’s grown up enough to try this, can’t you and Lily do the same?”
Ville seemed to steel something in himself, standing again and coming over to Mizee with the determination that had made him the man he was in his eyes once again.
“You’re right, Mizee. You’re absolutely right. Bam was a great friend and we all used to have a great time together. I can’t see why it couldn’t happen again, if we’re both mature enough to get over what happened between us.”
He clapped a hand on Mizee’s shoulder, smiling only a little tightly. “Call Bam and let him know we accept his generous offer. I’ll figure out a way to get Lily to agree to it.”
Mizee grinned. “He’ll want to talk to you, you know; he won’t believe you gave in this easily, and he knows the Valo stubbornness better than anyone.”
Ville punched Mizee’s shoulder playfully. “Paskiainen. I’m not that stubborn. If you really want, I’ll even be the one to call him, just so he knows you’re not going to drug me and tie me up to get me on the plane.”
Perching on the desk next to Mizee’s head, he pondered over Mizee’s words for a second and tugged at his already tousled hair. Finally, he had to say, “Well, you’re right, we need a studio-it’d be stupid not to take one-…and maybe going back to the Castle will be good for me.”
Mizee poked him in the side, looking at him with knowing eyes. “Don’t forget the fact that you miss him.”
Ville seemed to suddenly find something on his jeans very interesting; he picked at the material and kept his eyes down as he answered, “I-I don’t know if I miss him. I’ve stopped myself thinking about him for so long…”
“You’re lying to yourself, Ville. You know you miss him. Really, try to tell me you’re not looking forward to seeing him again, even just a little.”
Ville’s lips tilted up at the corners and he lifted his head to look up at Mizee with what looked like excitement in his eyes. “Do you think he’ll still run around like an excited puppy when I walk through the door? Or maybe he’ll have enough grace to be a little more…subdued.”
Mizee chuckled. “Bam…have grace? Have you really been away from him that long?”
Ville shrugged, once again unsmiling. “He got married and became a father, Mizee. Not that I’d know, but…I would think those things would really change someone.”
“Ville…” Mizee sighed, gently rubbing Ville’s knee to comfort him. “Married father or not, he’s still Bam. He still has that Bam-immaturity we all know and love; that never went away. He only ever shows maturity or acts his age when he’s with his kid.”
Ville’s head snapped up and he moved his leg away from Mizee’s hand. “How the fuck would you know? Have you actually seen him since we broke up?”
Mizee nodded, and Ville’s nostrils flared as his guard went up.
“When did that happen and why the hell didn’t you tell me?”
Mizee’s eyes stayed away from Ville’s. “He may have come to Finland for a demo or two. Ville, did you really think we’d all stop being friends with him just because things between the two of you didn’t end well?”
Ville was pouting again. “No. I just didn’t think you’d keep it a secret from me.”
“Ville, you were heartbroken and Lily was finally making you happy again. What would you have done if you’d seen Bam again, hm? I don’t know for sure, but you and I both know it wouldn’t have helped with your recovery.”
Ville’s voice was flat and mirthless. “Thanks for the vote of confidence, Mizee. I feel truly accomplished knowing you all believe I can handle this now.”
“I was only trying to do my best to help you, Ville. I wasn’t keeping secrets, as you put it. If you’d asked me about it, I wouldn’t have lied. But I wasn’t going to just throw him in your face when you were almost happy again.”
Ville did that steeling himself thing again, hopping off the desk and going to lean against the wall across from Mizee. “It doesn’t matter, anyway, I guess. What happened between Bam and me is past and we’ve all moved on. Let’s just do what we do best; go to West Chester, fuck around with Bam, and make a ridiculously soppy rock album.”
Mizee’s grin was huge. “That’s the Ville Valo I know. Wish me luck with telling all this to Seppo. You know he’ll hate all the arrangements involved in getting us all to America again this year.”
Ville snorted. “Just tell him Bam’s letting us use the studio for cheap. That usually softens him right up.”
Mizee nodded with a laugh, picking up his mobile. “That’s our Seppo. Penny pincher to the core.”
“How much is he charging anyway?”
Mizee shrugged, flipping through the contact list on his phone. “Not much. He knows us and he knows our situation. I actually had to make him go higher just to feel like we weren’t taking advantage of him.”
Ville couldn’t help but smile. “That’s Bam for you.”
“Yeah, it is. He really is a good guy. I think three months at the Castle with him is going to be a blast for all of us.”
“Good luck with Seppo, Mizee. If it makes you feel better, I’ve got to go talk to Lily about this.”
Mizee grimaced. “Good luck with that, then, too.” He dialed Seppo and waved at Ville, walking out of the room with a ridiculously dramatic frown on his face that made Ville laugh.
