This is horrible.

CARLY Ryan believed she had found the man of her dreams in a Texas-born, Victorian-based, 20-year-old "emo" named Brandon Kane. In reality, he did not exist ( Read more... )

I read this in the paper at work today and yes it is gross.

The way it's reported, it's really hard to believe that the father isn't at least slightly mentally retarded. Not that that excuses him in any way, of course, but some of the things that have been reported are not just "This guy's a sicko" or "This guy's also dumb at being a murderer" but totally "How does this guy even tie his own shoes?"

On a separate note which is more just my anger at stupid newspaper reporting, what is with this bit:
'the son allegedly said to police officers: "You are saying I murdered Carly".'
Why is that newsworthy? It's not an admission of guilt, OR a denial of guilt. It's someone repeating what he's been accused of, like pretty much anyone would do in that situation, guilty or not. Did this come from the Advertiser?

Yeah this was their online version (it was linked from their e-mails)... I have a pretty huge problem with Court Reporters ever since my case... the spelt the victim's name wrong, quoted things SO obviously wrong & completely out of context... it doesn't surprise me that they'd use a sentence like that. I assume it's to catch a casual reader so they would then believe he did admit guilt. Although it sounds like he helped with the murder - the main charges are against the father. It seems like the son was just roped in for the day in question... but maybe more will come to light as the trial continues ( ... )

Hmm, well I guess from my point of view anyone who would murder or rape (or be fifty and try to sleep with a fifteen year old) has a mental abnormality of some kind (again, not that it's an excuse), but a lot of them can function perfectly well in society apart from that... whereas everything I read about this guy made me think he should be wearing a fluoro vest and headgear when he walks to the shops. If you know what I mean. For crying out loud, he WROTE to his relatives asking for help with an alibi! Who puts that in writing?!? It sounds like he was in jail when he did it, too, so he should have known the police would have been reading his mail...

And Wattle St? Man, I am totally going to have my eyes checked. I swear I've never seen it. Maybe I'll make a special trip tomorrow just to verify it exists (even though it will be closed by the time I get home from work).

I don't know, I've read/heard about a lot of cases and the people accused/guilty of the crime definitely had their little 'oddities'. Like the guy accused of king hitting the other kid at a party (it was dismissed before I left for euroland, so I can't remember names)... the guy ~seemed~ like a nice kid in the court, but then after the case was dismissed it was revealed he was a complete weirdo that basically had no friends and had no social skills whatsoever. He was also on night detention and obviously wasn't following that court order by being at the party. So I'm not sure if I'd go as far as to say the father was retarded... but definitely something wrong. Although the letter thing did make me laugh. Maybe that's why he tried to plead guilty to manslaughter though? (That was thrown out, which makes me believe the prosecution has something up their sleeve?). I just thought his other (I guess 'possible retardations') were just part of his obsession... like him telling people she was going to get it for kicking him out of her 15th ( ... )
