First of all, this journal is for women who have a genuine interest in women's rights and commitment to sisterhood. Discussion has always been a vital part of the development of the women's movement. If you disagree with something published here, please don't hesitate to say so unless your opinions fall under the banned comments section. If you do ( Read more... )

This is not a defense of any of the particular subjects that are, well, subject to deletion, but it seems odd to say that you welcome disagreement while only allowing very slight disagreement. The capitalist press seems to do the same when it completely ignores anti-capitalist messages while still claiming to encourage and respect dissent. I believe that the best way to advance a cause is to welcome dialogue with those who vehemently disagree, as many times, people have not even fully conceptualized another's way of thinking.
I guess my point is that an echo chamber seems to serve no purpose other than the emotional boost that it offers its' participants.

Well, you have in fact disagreed in the past with things I have written on my journal. And you are disagreeing now to something. Both of these times you have disagreed with me about things that are not on the banned comments list and invited my response. You have treated me with respect and seem genuinely interested in an answer. Which is why none of your comments have been deleted. So I'm not exactly running an echo chamber here.

My purpose in keeping this journal is not to change men's minds or the break the conditioning of patriarchally colonised women. If that were my purpose I would delete everything I have written right now. Because there would be no point for me to try and do that. It would be completely pointless ( ... )

I reread my earlier response and want to apologize for the unintended hostility that was contained within that post. I won't blame it on the cold that I've been nursing for the past 48 hours. Yours is truly one of the most thoughtful journals that I've come across and I really appreciate your expression of a perspective that I might've not ever quite realized before (and considering the weapon that is the gender of my birth, I'm not claiming to fully realize it now).

I suppose what I mean is that the clarity of your expressed thought has been so enlightening for me that I sometimes forget that this is, indeed, a presonal journal. As such, it certainly is not in the spirit of censorship that you explicitly prohibit the advocation of certain perspectives. Being black, I can't imagine a personal journal that I might keep where I would welcome comments where people sought to marginalize or dehumanize me because of their distorted beliefs concerning race.

I think it takes a lot of courage to disagree with someone like me who is pretty ( ... )

Thanks alan. This is a really lovely comment. I've actually been wondering why it is that you read my journal so now I know.

Just out of curiousity, if you did keep a more political journal would you allow comments that were racist and sexist? Because this is, as you noted, both a political and personal journal and I do open it up to people I do not know. I guess I just feel if I go to a blog or journal that allows all sorts of comments I feel less safe to comment there. I also wanted to let everyone know that I was moderating and how so that people wouldn't waste their time.

Anyway, thanks again for your kind comments. I hope you get better soon.

You are so nice ;)

I definitely think the blogging will pick up as I start research for my thesis, even if it's just to post some nuggets of wisdom that I don't want to lose ;)

Thank you for the blogging you do, by the way! I was just reading your userinfo and was especially happy by your call to let it "all hang out". More women need to think this, need to say this to each other.
