I think I'd have responded to him the way you did. I'm so literal most of the time. I had a friend call this morning and then he said he'd see me in a few seconds. It didn't sink in till I heard the knock on my door less than a minute later. Sure threw me off balance this time, but in a good way :)

Incidentally, when I return from my second exile, I'll probably hit up Scrabble in the City... any idea if people would appreciate me pulling out a French scrabble board?
