i went to honduras!!! make the fried bananas! yum. or make the zucchini/squash soup (sopa de pipian), which is basically whole milk, zucchini, sugar and cinnamon sticks simmered together. or make tamales. or eggs, black beans and fried potatoes. some of the things i remember...
oh yeah, and spaghetti or that soup with chicken broth, noodles, and potatoes.
My host mom made us Chop Suey once. We were so amused because it tasted so very Honduran. :)
I would say go pick up some Plantains at the grocery store and fry up some Platanos, they're sure to be a big hit.
If you're already making homemade tortillas for your class, tuck in some beans into the raw corn mixture before you cook them, so that you have a delicious little tortilla pocket. That was always my favorite.
yah, i'd say go with teh plaintains. but my town never gave us any real meals that i would say had a "recipe". you could boil some "pataste", here called chyote, like they gave us...but thats the most digusting thing i've ever had to choke down. so stick with the plaintains and tortillas: always a good bet.
I would my platanos maduros... the really yellow yellow ones that are right before going rotten.. cut them horizontally and fry them. other than that rice and beans is easy and self explanatory... good luck!
platanos are a good call. my mom would slice them and rub them with sugar, then fry them. gah. so rico.
while i was there, i wrote down the recipe our fam used for pastel de pina. i made it once, and it wasn't quite the same, but it was still relatively delicious. i'd be happy to pass on the recipe if you want.
sure! that would be wondeful! everyones been talking about the platanos which are definately very honduran, but...i didn't really like them. so we were thinking more along the lines of baleadas or arroz con leche. thanks for the advice!
