love the sail, DON'T "love" the sail

Disclaimer: Its been a while since I went sailing on a big boat, my last ship was an icebreaker so if someone who was present in one of these stories I've been trying to dredge up out of the depths of my memories see something untrue or wrong chalk it up to my brain being broken or that there're probably all sea stories anyway...  To non sailors ( Read more... )

Hey! I was there!

I read this out loud to Eric, who giggled and smiled at his reference.

Thanks for bringing back the good memories of the trip

You missed was the non-battle battle sails(or as we were calling them, the "Battle Within" sails), the lunar eclipse sail, and of course, The "Greet the Lady" sail (there were fireboats!) wherein after headed out under the Golden Gate, Carter just pointed to a random female passenger and said "There she is... The lady."

Carter... really what else can you say. The only place I've ever sailed with him was at SEA. I felt out of place, I can only imagine what he felt like. He almost got the crew to go looking for "The Donkey Show" in TJ... but had to settle for some strip club.

Hehe.

I remember the year previous when I pointed out to the Mate that though he was onboard for 4 months (we started 2 days apart from each other) he had never furled that particular sail. Mindy slyly replied "Oh really?"

Everyday for a week he was in charge of "furling" (or attempting to furl) that thing.
and everyday he would curse my name while doing so.
I also pointed out that after him being onboard for several months he had never taught any of the stations. I remember his first "life of a sailor" lesson.
"Any of you kids every drink warm pond scum?" (silence... awkward pause) "Uh.... so any questions?"
one small girl: "How do you spell 'Hard Tack'?"
J immediately "Next Question!"

Good job hiding his name, as he is now a serious captain that demands utmost respect at all times! (No laughing!)

yeah.. repect... those chomps require no demand respect.

I love Mindy (yes I'm married, but the love between a capt and a good mate can't be denied) Really. How can anyone so I might not ever work as a capt again w/o her. She made my job easy or maybe she just forced me to do all the paper work and gave me time to do it. How come the MAte gets all the fun stuff? and the Master gets to, uh, well never mind.

Another snippet from the Brig. Goes something like this (involves a guy with a beard).
"Mindy can we be stood down earily?"-Lady Crew member
"No"-Mate
"Can I be stood down early?"-Lady Crew member
"No, but the cannons need to be cleaned... all week."-the Mate.
