Hipsterdom

Time to beat a dead horse, and take a quick break from all the econo-politico ranting.

Adbusters recently came out with this article and caused quite a stir among any and all self-denying hipsters out there. It was funny and successful to the extent that it got all of these people huffy. It was even given a pretty stark and devastating title: " ( Read more... )

It's really funny that you brought up that article because we were just discussing it in my British Music & Subcultures course. I pretty much agree with everything you said but unfortunately I wasn't really able to articulate it in our class discussion because a lot of people in my class are pretty uninformed and don't even know what a hipster is. One girl had never heard of the Police, actually. It was pretty ridiculous.

I really agree with you that Internet plays an integral role, and I agree that it's not the "dead end"... I do wonder what's next, though. I always wonder what the next logical step is but so far I haven't been able to see that far into the future. Hipster culture incorporates so much (another issue I had with that article... the club kids and the fixie riders and the literary geeks get thrown in the same pot and they're not always the same) and that makes it really hard to try and look ahead, I think.

yup, totally an umbrella term that basically includes every alternative subculture ever. It's pretty much just become a general denominator: popular culture vs. counterculture. Norms vs. punx.

As far as looking ahead; A year or two ago I wouldn't ever have thought disco/funk would ever be part of the revivalism, time has proven me wrong I guess. I suppose if you combine irony with any sub-genre you can revive anything, even if it's shitty and annoying. But that's just nit-picking. So long as its basically exploring all the alternative methods of embracing all the things in life I will be down for it. Plus so far as people are generally moving in the direction of good taste: Viva!

True! I mean, I guess a lot of bad shit has to be made first, though. We've gone through modernism, post-modernism, and experimentalism, so maybe now we'll just get into awsesomeism? If you can't push the boundaries anymore maybe you can just refine what's already in them? I don't know. I'm interested in seeing what's next though.
