1. Name: Katelyn (Katey)
2. Age:17
3. Gender:Female
4. What are your hobbies/interests outside of HP? How do you feel these hobbies/interests contribute to your personality? Hmmm...I have to say that despite the fact that I love a lot of books I tend to be more of a film person (don't actually particularly like the HP movies, though). I love the movies and I love getting wrapped up in the characters and story of a good movie/book. I particularly like short stories, however because they take up less of my time and tend to “get to the point” faster than novels. I like gardening, I like being outdoors, I really love animals, and I adore horseback riding. I love knitting (something about the tactile aspect of it) and I love laughing and being with friends who I can be intellectually witty with. I love trying new things, I love rock-climbing and I love roller coasters!
I think that my hobbies and interests reflect that I’m a generally easy-going very easily-amused person. I have fun in life, and unfortunately have a tendency to disregard more important things in favor of said fun activities. I am a little bit two-sided in that I am capable of very deep, interesting conversations and am fascinated by many different things (boundless curiosity, here) and at the same time am very excitable and all for a good adventure.
5. Which Harry Potter character do you feel you can relate to the most? Explain. Which character is your favorite? Again, explain.
As for who I am most like I’d say the Weasley twins or perhaps Ron. I can relate to Fred and George in that I feel sometimes as though no one quite takes me seriously, despite the fact that I have my own off-kilter little talents and brilliant moments. People can sometimes peg me as such a spaz/absent-minded type that they don’t realize that I’m capable of being deeper than that. At the same time, I doubt I’m quite as bold and goofy as they are. I don’t possess their obsession for breaking the rules, I’m a little more subtle, I think. I’m like Ron in my loyalty and support for my friends and also because of my jealous tendencies. A lot of my friends are geniuses in their various ways and I sometimes feel like I am dwarfed by them or that I am just someone who amuses them, even though I know better than to think that.
Sirius Black has always been my favorite. I think it’s his dark, misunderstood, mischievousness, brashness and unfailing loyalty. He has a lot of the same characteristics that I find appealing in Sherlock Holmes. The sort of misunderstood nature and the cleverness. Cleverness is smexy, what can I say. He’s just really cool and (for me) a really fascinating character. One of those people you’re just itching to know more about.
6. Give us explanations and reasons for and against you being sorted into each house.
a. Gryffindor
For:I love adventuring. I love being spontaneous and following my gut. I enjoy having fun, have a bit of a disregard for the rules and at the same time have a strong set of ethics and things I believe in. I attempt to follow my conscience and what I believe to be the noble thing to do. I am active in the pursuit of imparting these ethics to others.
Against:I’m not sure I’m quite bold enough to be a Gryffindor. I may believe highly in doing what is most noble but at the same time I’m not sure how capable I am of keeping secrets, and pulling off expeditions that are against the rules. There are times where I’d rather not risk being caught, and would rather do something else instead. I can’t say I possess much stealth, nor athletic ability, either.
b. Hufflepuff
For:I’m a warm and fuzzy person, most of the time. I’m a keeper of the peace among my more dramatic friends and am quite loyal to those I really care about. I also have a lot of empathy for people, even if I don’t know them.
Against:I don’t care much for rules. If I feel I can get away with something, I will. I’m not preachy and I don’t have a tendency to tell people off for not following rules as I could care less. I don’t really respect conventions, customs or authority unless said authority has earned my admiration and respect.
c. Ravenclaw
For: I have an extreme amount of curiosity when it comes to things I’m interested in. I have a tendency to become obsessed with whatever particular fascination phases me and then learn all about it. I can (occasionally be quite witty, other times however, I’m just plain tongue tied and bad at expressing myself), I also tend to revel in my “alone time” and can be rather dreamy and “not-all-there” (think Luna)
Against:I only read and learn about what I have to in order to master something. Usually it’s some kind of skill I’m interested in. I’ll read all about it but then once I’ve learned what I need, I drop it and move on until I become wrapped up in something else. I learn and read out of necessity for greater goals rather than for learning’s sake. I also despise the conventional education system and don’t do well in school. I also really hate elitist intellectuals.
d. Slytherin
For: I am very diplomatic. I have a tendency to tell small lies and use a lot of eloquent speaking in order to maintain the balance between people and/or make myself look good. I can usually use this skill to obtain things/get what I want.
Against:Even though I have a bit of a flair for diplomacy I hardly ever utilize it, mostly because I don’t like playing at people and feel guilty about making myself look good. I am quite self-deprecating in nature and don’t view myself as anyone to look up to, anyone smart or worthy of much.
7. What was your least favorite moment in HP?Sirius dying. I can understand why it might have been necessary since it seems Rowling is attempting to make it clear that this is Harry’s quest and he must be without mentors in defeating the forces of evil, but I hated to see him die. The part of me that loves happy ending was just really rooting for Harry and him to be able to reunite and see how their relationship as “family” would develop. I also didn’t like Cho Chang. She really irked me. But I think that was probably a necessary part as well, being Harry’s first encounters with dating and romance.
8. What about HP appeals to you (e.g. the romance, the adventure, the friendships, the fantasy, the mystery)? The romance is not really what interests me (the exception being Ron/Hermione, I just really felt like they were supposed to be together) so much as the adventure and the mystery. I really like that there are parts of the story that are kind of shrouded in the past and get revealed to you as you go along and that there is a lot of room for speculation about various characters and events. It’s just plain fun to think about all those things. I’m also a sucker for a good rollicking adventure story and HP serves that up by the bucketload. I love page-turner type books, keeps my attention.
9. What would you do if your friend was in danger? What would you give up in order to save them? Would you lay your life on the line?I’m of the mind set that if you don’t die now, you’re going to die later, so you might as well die doing something noble like saving a friend. As for the superficial things I’d be leaving behind: you can’t take it with you, as they say. I mean, I think I’d rather die and save my friend than be racked by the guilt and depression that would come from seeing a friend die and mulling over how I might have been able to save them had I been less selfish. I find that I acquire guilt easily and over minor things and not saving a friend if they were in danger and I was capable of saving them would leave me an emotional wreck. I love my friends, frankly and while it would be an awful situation to go through I believe I would die for them.
10. If you could only store one memory in the Pensieve to visit over again, which one would it be? Why?Several years ago (I must have been like 14), my sister, my dogs and I were walking behind our house through a construction site (they were constructing a new housing development) and I got the brilliant idea that we should go down to the river that was at the east side of the development and watch the water and hang out on the rocks down there. My sister urged me not to go but being younger she followed anyway and I brushed her off as being a worrywart. So of course one of my dogs gets off her leash, and of course she jumps into the water, and of course the mid-summer current of the river starts dragging her downstream. So my sister is freaking out (understandably) and I am paralyzed with fear. My sister is crying and screaming at my dog, calling her over and over again. And she jumps in while I’m standing there looking like an oaf, and she starts getting pulled away. And at this point (seconds after she jumps in) I snap out of the shock I’m in and grab her arms and help her out. The dog makes it back to shore and we exit the premises, pronto, my sister’s clothes sopping wet and myself mentally shaken beyond belief.
That is one of those memories you never forget, and that haunts you forever and proves to be a turning point in your life. I was so wracked with guilt for days and days and days. Number one because I was stupid enough to go down there in the first place, despite the fact the current was high. Number two because I had let my dog get off her leash and then just stood there while she was being pulled away and Number three because my sister, four years younger than me had more courage than I did and jumped in after my dog to try and save her when all I could do was stand there in shock. I was too scare d. About a year later I had a series of nightmares about dogs in danger, one was about a dog being abused, one was about a werewolf coming after one of my dogs and in each of them I had a very palpable sense of extreme guilt. And it took me awhile but eventually became terrified of going to sleep and researched nightmares online in order to figure out how to stop them. It turns out that nightmares (supposedly) can be your unconscious mind’s way of reminding you of something that you have forgotten or feel guilty about. It was when I linked the nightmares to the incident the year before that they went away.
Anyway (this is so long), I would pick that memory to remind me of the guilt that I felt and the resolution that I made after the incident that risking yourself by acting is better than remaining passive and dealing with the guilt that accompanies the consequences of doing nothing.
11. What excites you the most in life? Where do you get the most joy and fulfillment?Animals and being with animals gives me a lot of joy. I can be having the worst day ever and one wag of my dog’s tail will completely turn my mood around. There is something about the nature of animals, their inability to pass judgement that makes them the best therapy in the world.
12. If you were in Harry's position during the "Snape's Worst Memory" incident, how would you view Peter, James, Sirius, Lily, Remus, and Snape differently? Why?To be honest, I don’t remember much about this part of the book (I have only read the HP books once each...somehow I am incapable of reading books twice, I don’t know why, I haven’t read the first one, for example, in nine years), but I think I would be upset at Sirius and James and Remus. Obviously Peter is always stupid, but if I were in Harry’s position I would have expected more of those three in particular, because they seem to be thought of so highly be so many people. I would also have a teensy bit of sympathy for Snape (I know I did when reading it).
13. If you had access to a time turner without worry of not being able to return, nor any other restrictions, what would you use it for and why? This is probably going to sound so cliche, but I don’t think I’d really want to eff with time. My life is the way it is because of what has happened in the past and I’m a little bit creeped out by the thought of how I might be changed right now if things in the past were to be changed. There’s a short story I read last year “A Sound of Thunder” in which a bunch of people travel back in time to the Jurassic period and one person steps on a butterfly and the entire world is changed when they return.
14. In the Philosopher’s Stone (AKA Sorcerer’s Stone) Neville had a choice: he could let his friends go out at night when they weren’t supposed to and potentially they could lose points for his house, or he could confront them and stop them from breaking the rules. What would you have done in his situation?
I think I would have probably confronted them. I’m really not sure how I’d act. I think it would depend on the friend. There are some people I might just let do what they want and not confront them about it, and then others (perhaps the ones I’m closer to I would probably at the very least question where they were going and what they were planning on doing, and probably confront them about not going out). There are other people I might even sneak out with. Depends.
15. Who (dead, alive, or fictional) do you most admire? This can be someone from real life or from Harry Potter.Well, there’s more than one. I admire Jack London quite a bit, for his attitude towards life “I’d rather be ashes than dust / Man was made to live, not to exist” despite the fact that he became a drunk. I admire Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey and anyone who contributes to the betterment of human understanding of other creatures on Earth or anyone who fights against the abuse of animals, and people, for that matter. I admire my friends, all of whom are really quite brilliant.
16. What is your favorite book outside of Harry Potter? What is it about this book that endears it to you?Oh goodness. I don’t know. Perhaps the Chronicles of Narnia because those books have been a childhood favorite of mine and because C.S. Lewis is so good at making his books feel ethereal and magical and they always seem to have a quality of wonderment to them. When I finish one of the Chronicles of Narnia books I almost expect to walk outside and be in a different world, kind of like with HP, sometimes you forget that what you’re reading about isn’t congruent with reality. Much like Lord of the Rings, as well. I am not a huge fan of LotR, but I have always had a tremendous amount of respect for the books and for Tolkien because reading them does not feel like reading a fantasy, it feels like reading a long lost history and Tolkien really must have been a genius in order to create that sense of history and reality rather than fantasy when reading them.
17. In Goblet of Fire, Harry was chosen for the Tri-Wizard Tournament even with the age-line. Ron was unable to enter because of the age restriction even though he really wanted to be a part of the Tournament. Was Ron right to be jealous/angry at Harry? Were Harry's reactions appropriate? Why?I think Ron was right to be jealous/angry at Harry. I would have been. Ron is always second to Harry, always behind him, always in the shadows. Ron don’t get no respect, damnit. He doesn’t get the glory that Harry gets, yet he’s always there to support him. It’s only natural that he get a little fed up with it all and think that this is just a ploy of Harry’s. On the flipside I can also understand Harry’s reaction because no one believes him and he’s forced into the spotlight again only this time he doesn’t have the support he had in earlier years by Ron. It’s understandable.
18. Which class would you look forward to the most at Hogwarts? Which classes do you/did you excel in most at school?I think I would look forward to Transfiguration, because McGongall is awesome and because I just think it would be a really cool skill to have. Also, maybe Divination. I feel like I’d be really amused by Trelawny, I can see myself really hamming it up for her, just to get her excited about the coming apocalypse or something, but that’s all.
In school I do well in what I’m interested in. Generally thats English, history, psychology, biology and art. Recently though, English has become more of a pain in the butt, I hate writing essays analyzing books and the like, for instance. I’m a hopeless failure at gym, (any kind of team sport), math, chemistry, physics or any kind of non-life science.
19. In the wizarding world, all 5th year students are required to pick a career to focus on going into their 6th and 7th years at Hogwarts. What career path would you choose? Why? How does it relate to what you wish to do (or are currently doing) in the future?I think I would like being a shop-keeper, like Fred and George or a teacher. Why? I guess I like the reward that comes with enlightening people about new things, exposing people to new ideas. I like teaching people about things they didn’t know about and having them find that they really enjoy/have an interest in said thing. It’s just really nice to know that you’ve sparked a new interest or passion in someone that wasn’t there before or have made them aware of something which may have changed their views. In real life I want to be a wildlife biologist/educator so teaching fits in somewhat well with that. One of my goals is to make people aware of and educate them about wildlife and the environment and like the idea of taking my passions and trying to allow others to see the same beauty or have the same interest in those things as I do.
20. In the Wizarding world, some pure-blood wizards consider Muggle-borns "filthy" and "horrible." In our world, people are categorized by their wealth, racial background, and appearance. What are your opinions on Muggle-borns? What are the qualities that you value in others?I value open-mindedness I think most of all. I value a willingness to try and learn new things and a willingness to help out other people as well as loyalty versus fair-weatheredness. I enjoy discussion and like it when people do not jump to conclusions about things. I value diversity (or at least, I hope I do) and in that sense I think I would have a very welcoming view of Muggle-borns.
21. You have stumbled across five magical wells. One is the Well of Common Sense and Logic, the second is the Well of Creativity, the third is the Well of Optimism, the fourth is the Well of Physical Strength, and the fifth is the Well of Beauty. You can only drink from one well, but once you do you will be endowed with that ability for the rest of your life. Which well do you think you would definitely not need, and which do you think you would want to drink from?
22. If you had to make 5 Horcruxes, who are what objects would you choose and why? Meaning, what means the most to you and why what significance does it have that you would want to put your soul into it?Oh, god, I have no idea. One might be a ring that I found when I was five years old and first moved into my house. It doesn’t have any real value or anything, it’s just something I’ve had forever and can remember finding and somehow it’s special that way. I can’t really think of anything else I would use, but I really don’t think I’d be able to kill anyone in order to make them, though. I think if I was forced to either make them or die, I’d rather die.
23. What would your boggart form be and why?I think my worst fears are fear of failure, fear of being afraid (and consequently not acting), and fear of guilt...I have no idea what kind of thing a boggart would transform into in order to portray those fears, but that’s what they are. I think fear of failure is probably my strongest.
