The tip is included in the 27 that you get when you multiply 9 x 3. This means that you should not be adding 2 to 27. You should be adding 3, the amount the three men kept for themselves. The manager received a total of $27 for the room: $25 for the room and $2 for the tip. He got that in increments of $9 from the three men. To get back to the original $30, you have to remember that each of the three men kept $1. So, 3 x 1 is 3. Then everything works out and you aren't missing the $1. So, the equation is misleading. It should be (9 x 3) + 3 = 30. The amount each man paid multiplied by the number of men, plus the amount they received back will get you the original amount paid.
