Lolita and Catch-22 are both fabulous, fabulous reads; you can't go wrong with either of those. The Metamorphosis is good and I do like it, but I don't think I derived near the amount of actual pleasure from reading it as I did from the former two. It's also quite a bit shorter and probably not as gut-wrenching, though, so you could probably treat it as an appetiser.
