Well, that's nice. I had to remove my post asking for help because it was spammed on a CRNA forum because they were offended that I considered money a perk of the career. I'm sure they're all willing to do their jobs for minimum wage ( Read more... )

Lame!

My friend Cara had to make this decision a couple years ago and it was hard for her, too, because she saw so many different ways she could go that she would really enjoy. In the end she chose being a nurse in the birthing center because she also wants to go into midwifery later on. She has never regretted her decision once and loves it. All it took was her first unassisted delivery and she was in total heaven! BUT, that of course does not mean it would be the most interesting place for you. She did not get her first pic doing her internship at the birthing center. She worked in ICU and found that that was not the place for her. She got lucky in being accepted and employed at the birthing center even though that is not where she learned...

That's cool. A lot of students expect to get hired out of their IP placements, but with the economy as it is they might be surprised. Many places are on hiring freezes right now.

One of my reservations about midwifery is the schedule. That might get really hard to wake up in the middle of the night randomly....

It's true that Cara goes from working nights 4 days to days 3 days after a 4 day break and it is reeking havoc with her. She says a lot of the night nurses are addicted to Ambiam (sp). She has small children, but they are in school. It would be much harder for you to do with your babe!

Well, luckily it would be a while before I'm actually working. First I finish nursing school, then I have to work for a while, then I apply and go through the masters program.

As a matter of fact I would do this job for minimum wage...and I have been a nurse for longer than you have been consuming oxygen... My only comfort is, people like you are weeded out in the selection process...

Yes, I'm sure you would.
You have no idea what kind of student I am, so I would not be so quick to judge if I was you.

It makes sense to me, that given our current economy, someone who was a nursing student and had multiple areas of nursing they find interesting, would not be wondering if they should consider the one that makes the most money since they have a family to support.

You are incredibly intelligent and caring, it is too bad your post to friends was broadcasted and taken out of context. Opinions are like assholes they say...

Well, I have to agree. But apparently according to at least one of them I'm a "fucking idiot".

I talked to Ben about it and he said that according to NPR the field is getting a lot of publicity and is really "in vogue" and is on its way to being flooded. So no wonder they're being so defensive about it. They don't want their salaries jeopardized.

I've known you for years and know exactly how hard you do work, which is SUPER hard.

Lazy is a relative term. And when you say "I'm lazy" it means maybe you just didn't get the laundry done TODAY but it will get done tomorrow.

I don't think you should have to defend your possible career choices and I don't think it matters WHY you choose one route or another. It is no one's business but your own. In fact I think beyond wanting a career where you do help people, getting PAID is important.

WTF we don't leave our houses to work for NOTHING. We leave to work for MONEY. I've heard people say "If I won the lottery I'd keep working." yea right. They might go to work doing something, but not likely want to work as long of hours as they previously did. Who WANTS to work double shifts? No one! (ok perhaps there is some nutter out there who wants to work doubles and put themselves in an early grave... but seriously ( ... )

Yeah, I was pretty shocked. I can see why someone would get offended at my post-I didn't sugar coat anything and meant to have a very frank discussion with myself and my friends. I didn't see the need to be "pc", or speak without offending. I hate how we have to cater our views to avoid offending people. I didn't say anything that wasn't true. I said what all of them thought at one point or another. How dare I say it outright?
There were a few kind replies and a whole lot of assholey ones. Why should I be surprised at that? Typical representation of people in general.

I am over it now, but it did hurt my feelings. It was hard to shake the insults even though I know they were coming from people who have no basis of judgement and who have the cowardly veil of the annonymity to hide behind. Moving on.

Yeah, you may want to make your posts "friend's only". Seriously. The last thing you'd want is your LJ being forwarded to someone 'they know' who's on some committee or other who might prevent you from getting the type of residency you might want. :P

Hiding behind anonymity is total chicken-shit way to go.

I did, after the fact. I don't have my identity out in the open on LJ, but it wouldn't take much sleuthing to find it.
