May admitted to being surprised that Bray had any strength at all to help them after his ordeal. But Cloe was a light weight on the end of the rope, and with three of them it didn't take much effort at all.
Cloe climbed out of the pit, dropped the canvas bag and fell to her knees. It was horrible down there. It smelled of something that had been dead for weeks. How did Bray And Salene stand it down there. Cloe untied herself, walked slowly away from the group and threw up. The experience had made her stomach twist into knots. She kneeled on the ground, almost crying. She didn't know why she was crying, Salene and Bray should be the ones crying, not Cloe.
Having gotten Cloe up, without saying another word, he walked a few yards away, and sat down, and watched them all... the mall rats. They bustled round Salene, and tried to help Cloe.
Who were they he wondered to himself... who were they? They were nothing, surely. Yet here they were, they'd been together, on and off, for years, and here they were. Except they weren't invincible, they were still in danger. Something he would have to sort out, but first he to get Mouse and his son back.
Cloe stood up and wiped her mouth off. 'eww' she thought. She swallowed hard and walked over to the group again. She stood there, like a lost puppy, wanting to scream for Ved to come and hold her, but she kept her mouth shut. And the other part of her wanted to curl up into a ball and just give up. She was weak, not strong like Salene and Bray. Cloe wondered if she would have lasted if she had been down in the pit and not Salene and Bray.
Salene watched, she couldn't talk, the touch of Ryan had made her mind think of Pride, that had been weird, and uncomfortable, but in the moment of all of this, it didn't matter. Everyone was fighting over who got to go, "Listen!" she said sharply, "If Bray is up to going, let him. Here, Patsy, give him your zapper," she said, nodding with her head, "Gel and I will head back to...Lex? We'll take Patsy, you four...be very careful, and get my babies back, our babies," Salene looked to hurt, so pained, she wanted to help rescue but she was in no condition. The adrenaline rushing through her suddenly made her know she could make it to the forest and wait, and there she would wait until Mouse was in her arms again. "Please Ryan, save Mouse and Bray, please," her eyes pleaded with him, leaning into Gel a bit for balance, waiting.

He pulled himself up, and dusted off.
