Bray left Amber in the kids' room then hurried to the Cafe, picking up a couple of blankets from their room on the way. He made two cups of cocoa, taking care not to fill them too much, as he didn't want to spill them

KC led the way out of the Breakfast Room and down the hallway to the office complex and around to the stairway which brought the two boys to the roof. It was a cool night, and a strong breeze blew. KC walked over to the edge and peered over, "It's gonna be a long night, huh?"
"Yeah... I don't know if I'm going to be able to sleep that well." Jack sat down and leaned against the railing. "Sometimes I wonder... KC, do you ever wonder if we'll really make it? I mean... That's not what I mean. What will the world be like when we're truly grown up. When we're old. Will we forget what it was like?..." Jack trailed off, knowing he was making now sense. He grabbed a piece of chipped cement of the ground and threw it off the roof as far as he could.
"Well," KC replied, "There's gotta be enough on tapes and disks so we won't forget completely. But given what our generation is coming from, when we get to be truly grown up, the world will be a different place, that's a given." KC hoped he didn't seem too philosophical, he'd spent a lot of time thinking about the same thing while in the Techno Camps. "We're coming from different experiences and that's going to make a different..." he paused, searching for the word he heard..."society."
Amber opened the door to the roof carpark and looked around. On the other side she could see KC and Jack having what seemed to be a somewhat serious conversation. Maybe it had been a bad idea to come out on the roof, after all she didn't want to disturb them. By the door there was Bray, waiting for her. "Hey you." she said, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him on the cheek. "So, how come I had to wait for a few minutes? What have you got planned?"
Bray looked over warily at KC and Jack. He'd hoped that he and Amber might have had the roof to themselves for a while, but that was the thing about being part of a Tribe, you had to learn to share your space. He nodded a greeting vaguely in their direction, though he suspected that they weren't going to take much notice anyway.
Returning Amber's hug and kiss, Bray just grinned in reply to her questions. Taking her by the hand, he led her over to the spread-out blanket and motioned for her to sit down. Crouching down, Bray picked up a mug and offered it to her. "Would the lady partake of a tasty beverage?" he asked in a mock haughty voice, sitting down next to Amber and wrapping the other blanket around them.
Amber couldn't help but grin as Bray led her over to where he had spread a blanket out. As much as she was always impatient to find out what a surprise was, she loved the fact that Bray would never ruin a surprise for her, and she gave his hand a little squeeze. She sat down on the blanket, legs cross and eager to find out what Bray's surprise was
( ... )
Picking up his own mug, Bray noted happily that Amber was pleased with the little surprise. He was glad to have the chance to do small things like this, to be rewarded with Amber's happiness. In the past, when they'd been involved in various stressful happenings at the Mall, these small moments of peace were too easily forgotten.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Bray commented, seeing Amber gazing out towards the sky. He leant over and kissed her on the cheek, then whispered in her ear, "Just like you are." It occurred to Bray that this would probably sound very corny, but he didn't care. This moment of contentment was not going to be forgotten.
KC ignored Jack, watching as Salene, dressed up fancy, walked away with Amber, right back into the Mall, leaving Bray on his own. KC nudged Jack again, gently, in the hip with the toe of his boots, "Get up man, let's go get a poker game going, come ON," he urged before turning to leave Jack on the ground.
KC headed over to where Bray was, peering around the vent, "Hey Bray," he greeted, giving him one of his pricelessly innocent smiles. "I hear the girls are busy tonight, let's go down to the Cafe and play a few hands, what do you say? I promise I won't even use my trick deck, we can play with the ones in the Cafe," he swore, holding his hand up in a promise.
"Ah, I dunno," said Bray dully, not even bothering to turn his head to look at KC properly. He felt like this might be a good time to be alone with his thoughts, especially seeing as he could just sit and not have to worry about Amber getting paranoid about him being in a mood, like earlier.
Bray sighed. "I was thinking I'd just sit out here for a bit, then maybe go and check on the baby - you don't really want me there." He shrugged, then looked at KC. The boy's face actually looked almost honest for once, and Bray felt just a little bit bad about it. "Oh, what the hell, go on then. Just a few games, yeah?"
Jack groaned loudly in KC's general direction. Just because he was conscious didn't mean he was awake. He watched as KC walked towards Bray, asking him if he was interested. "KC, man. I don't know how to play poker." Jack was quite embarassed to admit this, but maybe it would give him a way out of the game without having to lie.
"Aww come on Bray, it'll be fun," he began, "the girls are off doing whatever," he motioned with his hand at the door Salene had just left with Amber, getting ready to really protest. If the girls were doing some kind of Hen's night, then surely Bray deserved some kind of Stag party, right? But then Bray agreed, and KC smiled, "Cool, yeah yeah, just a few games, come on, down the cafe," he looked to Jack and rolled his eyes, "Ok Jack, you've played enough hands with me to hold your own weight, I'm sure you'll survive," he said cooly, slapping Jack on the back. "Come on man, let's go," he said, leading them down to the cafe.
