Title: When Worries Become Dust...
Fandom: Dune
Rating: PG-13 - Adult Themes
Summary: The morning after Chani confronts Irulan about her actions from keeping Chani from carrying a heir.

The sounds of the morning market entered the Atreides bedroom through open windows. The gentle wind blowing into the room danced with the sheer curtains. It was not the sound of the market that had awaken Chani, but it was the smells of the desert. The strong smell of spice that was all too familiar to her. ...A smell that brought back so many memories.

Chani breathed in deep and she opened her eyes. It had been a restless night. The day before Chani had spent time in the desert seeking answers. After months of trying, she had yet to get conceive a child for Paul Muad’Dib.

Chani rolled onto her side, reaching for Paul, but he was not there. Why had he not waken her? She wondered how long he had been awake, it was late into the morning. He must have known that she was troubled in her sleep, hopefully, she did not keep him up.

She sighed and rolled onto her other side to face the window. The night before, Chani had confronted the woman who had caused her so much heartache. Chani was amazed at what jealously could do to someone. Even though Chani was not Paul’s wife, she was the only one whom the Emperor loved and the only one who the Emperor would share his bed with. Chani had always known that Irulan felt that she was the one to deserve the right to bare the royal heir, but Chani knew that Muad’Dib would never allow that. In his eyes, Chani was his wife.

To offset Irulan’s measures to prevent her from conceiving, Chani had started a special diet from the desert immediately. The diet increased Chani’s intake of spice. Chani had a feeling that Muad’Dib had foreseen all of this. Why he did not tell her, she did not know. She did not like to question Muad’Dib.

Chani sat up and removed the blankets from her body. She threw her legs on the side of the bed. She touched the cold marble floor with her toes. The sensation sent a chill up her spine.

"Sihaya,” she heard a soft voice whisper from the entrance of the bedchamber.

Chani looked over her shoulder to see Muad’Dib walking near the bed. She smiled and looked back towards the window. She felt the bed adjust to Paul’s weight as he came up behind Chani, embracing her from behind. Chani placed her hands on his arms and she leaned against his chest, resting her head on his shoulder. He kissed her on her shoulder and neck. Gently, Muad’Dib rested his cheek against Chani’s forehead.

“The doctors said you changed your diet,” he said softly, his tone was unreadable.

Chani looked up into Muad’Dib’s eyes. “I’m sorry I did not tell you yesterday,” she said. “Irulan…-”

Paul pressed his lips against Chani’s forehead. “Ssh, I know,” Muad’Dib said. “Chani...there will be a baby,” his words were almost sad. Chani knew he wanted a child....

“You’ve seen it,” she said.

Paul nodded. He began stroking Chani’s dark hair. Chani was relieved. Her body relaxed in Muad’Dib’s arms. She adjusted herself in his arms so she was curled up in his lap, her hand holding his shoulder.

“I just wanted to protect you,” Paul whispered, it sounded to Chani as if he was speaking to himself.

“From what?” Chani responded.

Paul hesitated. He shook his head and smiled weakly. Chani put her hand on his cheek and she leaned up to kiss him. Whatever it was, she knew that she could trust Muad’Dib. He would tell her in time. Pulling away from his kiss, she looked in his blue-in-blue eyes.

“I love you,” she said.

“I love you, my Sihaya,” Paul replied, returning her kiss.

Chani climbed back onto the bed from Paul’s lap. She reached for his arm and pulled him down beside her. For a moment, she took in his features. She ran her hand down his body, pulling herself closer. Kissing Paul Muad’Dib again, she lost all concern about the future or what Irulan's actions. All she cared about was the love she had for Muad’Dib. She felt his hands caress her bare skin. Paul pulled Chani onto his chest where he kissed her deeply, his hands running through her hair. Chani felt the love that radiated from Paul's touch.

Both gave into what they could no longer control.

Little did she know, they were changing the future of the galaxy….
