I obviously wouldn't have thought about that before I became ill. Of course most people first check the look of a person, anything else is simply a lie. Those who stop with the first look, with those I have a problem. Those who go a bit deeper after a first impression, with those I don't really have a problem. The question in my opinion could also be: If a person is very young, do you consider her chance to become better, as bigger?

In my case lot's of social worker do think so and I hate them for that. I really wish I was 80 sometimes. I really think that and old looking person with my symptoms would have to justify less.

I think you're right - most ppl, if being entirely honest, do judge others by their looks at 1st. However, as u said, hopefully ppl would then look a 2nd time; closer.

"The question in my opinion could also be: If a person is very young, do you consider her chance to become better, as bigger?"

Well, I have 2 say I'm afraid that I do actually partially agree with that....as far as M.E. goes, anyway. From what I've seen from my M.E. friends, it does seem 2 appear that the younger u are when u 1st get ill, the more likely u are 2 make some sort of recovery. But obviously thats only my own, personal observation, & it doesnt necessarily mean Im right! (altho I have heard other ppl say the same kind of thing).

However, if your social workers were saying that because you're relatively young u should be better by now, or that u definitely will recover purely because you're not elderly....well, obviously thats totally wrong, & I understand how frustrating it must be 4 u 2 have 2 try 2 explain things 2 your S.W.'s yet again *hugs ( ... )

My weight has been up and down since I became ill, and I'm talking barely being able to hold at 9st when I first became ill to all the way up to 13st (135lbs-185lbs)after I'd been ill for 10yrs. I'm not small either, at 5'10" and with a large frame. When I was very very skinny people could see just how ill I was and did seem to take the illness more seriously, but then as I ballooned people are always telling me how 'well' I look ( ... )

"....as I ballooned people are always telling me how 'well' I look."...."A couple of weeks ago I was feeling the illest I had ever felt, I was almost passing out I felt so ill, and an alternative health practitioner told me how 'well' she thought I was looking that day!"

Arrgh! Is there anything more frustrating than being told how "well" u look when you're actually feeling like utter SHITE?! Happens 2 me alot, too. Sometimes ppl really do mean it - they dont bother 2 look beyond the obvious....if they did, they'd see the huge black rings around my eyes, or notice the fact that I literally cant keep my eyes open - but other times I think ppl just say it 4 something 2 say. 4 example, when I almost died last year due 2 a medical mishap, I was transferred back 2 my local hospital after being intubated/on a ventilator in a London ITU. I looked AWFUL by any1's standards.....V thin (dangerously so), extremely white/grey/blue complexion, on oxygen, with multiple lines/tubes, etc, & I could barely communicate. Yet I still repeatedly got told ( ... )

This is a really interesting question. I think that people in the general public probably do try and fit people in to the 'rolls' that are protraied in the media. Even my family, when I go really pale they start asking me whats wrong [lol, same thing as the last 6 years mum!] The stupid thing though is that it really can cause both issues, if people are immobile they often put weight on. I'm living proof! I really am very big, a size 24 and far too many stones to mention! I am hungry like a normal person and move as much as a squished fly ( ... )

Thanx 4 completing the poll Jo, & 4 your comment. I hope u dont mind, but Im also going 2 put a few quotes from your above comment in an actual journal entry, so I can answer u more fully. If u dont feel comfortable tho, just let me know & I'll delete it. No worries :)

"Here are a couple of me, they've been on my LJ, but they prove my point in regards to my size."

Ok, I think u know me well enough by now 2 believe me when I say that I never say anything I don't mean (I think I'm too straightforward sometimes - ppl often find it/me hard 2 take!), so I can honestly say that u look beautiful. Those new userpics of yourself that u made awhile ago were absolutely stunning - u look fabulous dahhling! And that's the truth. Ok u may be a size 24, & I do understand how uncomfortable/upsetting that must be 4 u, because like me, u obviously cant exercise & thats so frustrating, I know :( If I ever find any good solutions I'll be sure 2 let u know :) And likewise, pls do enlighten me if you find anything!

"Your wonderful x"Ditto! :D ( ... )
