Elaine has come outside with him as he returns, and smiles. "Oh, he seems to be quite good," she says.

"You have taught him very well."

Ryan takes a sip of his coffee and smiles. "Yeah, he is. Though he took to batting the rock around without any prompting. Maybe we could get him some hockey equipment."

He had waited, wanting to see how David like skating and if he had any interest in hockey instead of pushing it on him.

"It might be a nice idea," she says. "I just wish he had some other children to play with." She leans her head on his arm.

"He does seem quite content with us, though."

"Me too," he says with a sigh, watching David move more confidently as he chases the rock.

He doesn't say anything to the second comment, not sure if that's the truth. No matter how much time he spent here, he'd still want to go home one day and they still didn't know what would happen when he did.

"So how are you?" he asks, turning to look at her.

Not far behind Ryan, Jack comes out, skates slung over one shoulder, hockey stick in the other. He's wearing the L.A. Kings jersey Tony and Michelle got him for the first birthday he'd spent in Milliways, the one with his last name and the number 24 on the back.

Taking a seat on a rock near the shore, he takes off his boots and starts strapping on his skates, moving a little awkwardly as he's wearing a couple layers under his nylon pants.

Spotting Ryan and David already out on the ice, he waves to them.

It takes a second for Ryan to see him, only noticing something moving out of the corner of his eye.

But once he sees Jack, he smiles and goes over to where he is, careful not to spill his coffee. "Hey. Nice Jersey."

Though the Kings sucked, but still.

"Thanks. Birthday gift, year before last. Teaching David to skate?" Jack says, getting to his feet and pulling the skate guards off his blades.

"Yeah, he took to it quickly," Ryan says, watching as David wobbles on the ice but soon regains his footing.

"I planned to just working on the skating part today but David had other ideas." And Ryan didn't even have to encourage him! He wasn't sure how long this interest in hockey would last but he's hoping long enough so they could play a game or two.
