Last night was easily one of the most fucking scary and awesome nights (and mornings) of my life.
11 pm on a Friday night I was at UP Fair. Jay and I had been planning this for a while now: the Friday edition of the fair had fireworks at midnight, and right after a bunch of us were going to crash at my place for a late night drinking session
.
Like in many UP Fairs and concerts, we were also dreading the arrival of the Orcs, or the Jumping Jologs (aka JJ's): a collective term for the dirty, black-clad shady dudes who show up refusing to pay entrance, with a reputation as violent troublemakers. There were so many people at the fair, and even early in the evening, many JJs. The security detail seemed to be having a field day with all this.
The lines were gender-segregated, and for some reason while the girls' line took maybe 20 minutes for us, the boys were in line for 2 HOURS. After that wait, we were understandably anxious to get as much fun as we could. We were wandering around the side of the fairgrounds facing the Education building. I think some of us wanted to try out wall climbing. I in particular, wanted to go on the zipline. (Jen calls this the "flying fox" I dunno what it's really called) I was taken off guard by a loud banging noise. I whirled to find everyone backing away from the walls. Many of the Orcs, either refusing to line up or pay for tickets or simply wanting to cause a ruckus, were hammering against the flimsy metal yero of the barriers. We could see the indentations their force made against the metal, the bumps growing bigger and bigger.
"The Horde is coming" some dude near us whispered in amusement.
I am not kidding when I say at that moment we were beginning to fear for our lives.
It's a bit of a whirlwind after that, although we had to take time out to buy food. We situated ourselves to the nearest exit, only to hear the ongoing concert stop and the organizers plead for order. By this time it was around quarter to midnight by then. Abby (who was waiting for us in IB) called to tell us to get our asses out of there as it wasn't safe.
"Police reinforcements are on their way." The organizers announced on stage.
"This is the best fair ever." JK said.
We decided that since it was nearly midnight anyway, we might as well see the fireworks. And they were spectacular, really they were. It was nice to see that Enchanted Kingdom's sponsorship had paid off. We all had a nice "Happy Valentine's Day~" group hug, steeled ourselves, and went outside. As we left, Bamboo was on stage, singing "Noypi".
In order to get to the waiting Abby, Bet, and Rich, we had to take a long detour around the academic oval. Once we got out of the sunken garden, it was relatively smooth sailing. No one bothered us at all, and anyway we were together. As we passed by the area where we first heard the banging, Bamboo was down to the last song in his set "Hallulejah".... which was a little ironic given that all hell was about to break loose. From our distant standpoint, we could see that the Orcs had resumed their breakdown of the walls. By JK's estimate, the metal was halfway destroyed by the wave of humanity moving, as one Orc, to bulldozer down the walls. At the same time, many of them were throwing ROCKS and other debris over the walls. O_O
By the time we got to my house, Carlos ridiculously drunk, and everyone cooing over my Pomeranian (pictures later haha), Jopi got a text from a friend who was still at the fair. Apparently the concert was stopped entirely, and all the performers sent home. RIGHT AFTER Bamboo's performance, the Horde broke down the walls completely and stampeded onto the fairgrounds. The text reported that many staff and security personnel were injured, with lots of bloodied Orcs as well. If this was the case and we'd stayed even just a little bit longer...
"OMG" everyone said.
"BEST FAIR EVER." I said to JK. XD.
Good lord.
Oh and Happy Valentines all! ♥
