Plagiarism?

So has anybody ever heard of a cursed people who fight and kill each other all night, and then the next day are whole again, only to fight again the next night, and any wayward outsiders unfortunate enough to get be killed then become part of the endless nightly battle?

Because I have. As a pre-teen, I read through all of the Robotech books (shut up. it was the 80s, and Robotech was big). This situation is almost precisely lifted from the cursed planet of Peryton, which as night rolls across it, is engulfed in a huge war by crazed zombies that tear each other apart, only to vanish with the sunlight and reappear the following night, whole and "alive" again. It even includes the bit about outsiders who are killed becoming part of the madness.

So did Sanderson rip this off from some other popular myth or legend, of which I am unaware? I guess I'm asking if this is a common enough story that it can be seen as an homage, as opposed to copying something obscure and little-known, which to me would be less obviously unoriginal and thus closer to plagiarism?
