I want to like John Scalzi's writing more than I do.  He seems like a nice enough guy.  Some of his themes appeal to me.  His book about the purple sheep was one of my favorite comic reads of the last several years, and I've been willing to believe that the shallowness of Agent to the Stars was an intentional representational strategy.  But I ( Read more... )

I really, really like John as a person. I've been reading his blog since 1999 and have corresponded with him off and on for years. I enjoyed Old Man's War (which I originally read when he posted it on his blog) (fun fact: after he announced he was going to put it up, but before he actually did, I e-mailed him saying, "are you nuts?!? Look, I have an agent who takes queries by e-mail; give him a shot." And he said OK, and queried my agent at the time, Jack Byrne. Jack read it promptly but passed on representing him, so John put it on his blog, where it promptly got bought by Tor.) I also enjoyed The Ghost Brigades and The Last Colony, and I thought The Android's Dream was a hoot ( ... )
