The Disney version is actually remarkably sanitized; in the original, Pinocchio dies a gruesome death and the cricket is killed by Pinocchio smashing him with a hammer and comes back as a ghost. Also, he actually becomes a full on donkey, sold to the circus, and breaks his leg while being forced to perform, and is nearly skinned to make a drum. He only becomes human again because he gets thrown into the ocean and the fish nibble off all the donkey skin.
