Oh fuck.
Oh holy fuck.
Oh holy fucking shit.
Patrick could not believe it.
“What are we supposed to do while you’re gone?” Patrick pouted softly, arms wrapped around Sebastien.
“I don’t know. Take her to the park. She likes the park.” Sebastien suggested. “Play tag with her or something. Have fun with your daughter, Patrick.” He smiled and kissed Pat on the edge of his mouth. “I’ll be home around eight.”
He did have fun with her. Sophie was an extremely interesting four-year-old with a sharp mind and adorable curiosity. “Papa, will you push me on the swing?” Bright green eyes glittered in the mid-day sun and her winter coat swallowed her whole. He smiled softly and nodded, hoisting her up on “the big girl swing” and grabbing hold of the chains.
“Ready?”
Her head full of red hair shook up and down and he pulled back, nudging her forward gently.
After he pushed her on the swing a bit, he stood by and watched her climb the monkey bars and the jungle gym, run up the play-fortress and slide down, then climb back up. Sophie extended her legs and was able to hang upside down from the bars then pull herself up so she could sit on the very top. “Look at me, Papa!” She shouted with pride and waved down at him, smiling widely. Patrick smiled and waved back, thinking to himself: so far so good.
In the next hour, a few more neighborhood kids came and Sophie, being a social butterfly, started a game of Hide and Seek with them. Patrick watched them play for a grand total of ten minutes before quickly becoming uninterested. He pulled out a book and flipped it open; lifting his eyes every so often to make sure he could still see Sophie.
Five minutes later he could hear one of the children saying “ready or not, here I come!”
Ten minutes later, the boy was running around, looking for two more people.
Another five, and the boy had found everyone.
Everyone except for Sophie.
“Did you see her?” Patrick lowered his eyes again and made a head count, not spotting any long red hair. He dropped his book to the ground and stood up. “She’s really good at hiding.”
“Let’s try and find her.” Chimed in another boy.
“Nah,” the first one said. “Let’s start anudder game.” Patrick eyes bugged out of his skull
Which brings us back to:
Oh fuck.
Oh holy fuck.
Oh holy fucking shit.
“SOPHIE!” He bellowed out loudly, scanning the park. “SOPHIA!” He cursed under his breath and looked around the playground equipment, under, over, in any possible hole she could squeeze herself into. He sprinted into the small wooded area near the park, yelling her name every five seconds.
His heart had never beaten this quickly. His thoughts never rushed through his mind like this. He hadn’t panicked like this since that time someone tried to drug Sebastien in Berlin. He hadn’t broken into a fit of uncontrollable sobs since he was a small boy.
Run, search, scan, curse, yell, repeat.
“SOPHIA!” His cry had turned desperate, throat hoarse from screaming at the top of his lungs. He spun around and screamed again. “SOPHIA!”
Patrick almost jumped three feet when he felt a tug on his pants. There was Sophie staring up at him with wide eyes, glazed over most likely in fear. He stared down at her, sharing her “deer in the headlight” look.
“Is the game over, Papa?” Her soft, innocent voice brought the silence to a halt. Patrick felt air fill his lungs and his heartbeat returned to normal again. He sunk down to his knees and hugged her tightly letting out a laugh and nodding his head. He couldn’t yell at her, she was just hiding after all.
“Yeah, the games over baby.”
“Did I win?” She hugged back and let him lift her up and hold her in his arms. He nodded again.
“Yeah…yeah you won.” Then a thought crossed his mind. “Sophie?”
“Yes, Papa?”
“If I buy you a toy and some hot cocoa, can you promise not to tell daddy what just happened?” She moved back to look at him with wide eyes.
“But Papa, that’d be lying.”
“Two toys, hot cocoa, and a ring pop.” Her eyes lit up and she smiled.
“Ok!”
