Modern dance has a lot of floor work. I teach it to kids and teens and beginning adults. I usually spend some time with X-rolls across the floor, leading with the arms, then leading with the legs. It's a good warm-up for hips and shoulders and rolling through your spine. We also do things that get you into the floor and then back up, like a lunge that turns to a fankick that you step up out of. Inversions, small handstands, are also good for upper body strength and balance. Remember that modern dance has a lot of weight, so use gravity to your advantage!

Good luck!!!
