coming home to kiss away night

Feb 28, 2005 18:50

Let's see, status report for Dawn's week:

-- Sister still lost in the past but okay as far as I know.

-- Home life: increasingly lax with not much supervision. I can deal with that. Everyone's still being all researchy and working on how to get everyone back where they should be, and I'm wondering if there isn't something to what Jordy told me ( Read more... )

I wait after school and drama club activities, down the hall, well away from the auditorium door. Where I can see it, but have time to duck into an open classroom if Jordy comes this way. I'm not taking the chance of setting off the reaction I got from him again.

I watch Dawn come out, then wave at her when she turns toward me. God, please let her not be all screwed up like the others.

"Hey, J," I say, walking up to her. I look her over carefully for signs of incipient weirdness, but she looks okay as far as I can tell. "How's it going?"

I smile. Thank god, she didn't call me some weird name or say "how doth the day" or something. As for the question...

"Um...well, that's kinda hard to answer." I pull myself up from the lockers I was leaning against and walk with her. "The last week has been pretty weird. Although refreshingly not almost getting eaten by monsters weird."

I frown. Unless you count Jordy...but he hadn't actually sprouted hair or anything.

I lower my voice. "So you've noticed the weird, too? It's kind of hard to miss, though." I glance at her. "I was hoping you'd be more normal than... everyone else. You're not wearing pantalons or anything." I snicker.

"It was kind of a shock to me, too! I mean, yeah, Jordy flirts with everyone in sight, but Sophie didn't seem like she thought of him like that." I shrug. "But who knows, maybe she just saw something in him that she didn't notice before? It happens."

Yeah, like suddenly noticing he has some weird ability to give you goosebumps--okay, so glad Avasa isn't around to read that.

"Man, I need a boyfriend," I mutter.

I'm not sure what to say to that. I can't commiserate with her since not only do I have a boyfriend, but we've been together long enough to take that next step... which I don't really want to tell her either.

And don't call Psychic Friends just yet, but I'm getting a weird little feeling that it'd kinda bug J if Jordy hooked up with Sophie.

"Boys are weird," I finally say. Heh, that leaves Avasa out of it because technically he's a man.

I glance at her and smile, really glad she didn't want an explanation for that. "Think I'm better off without one? Considering the last two guys I've been interested in--one was a vampire, one just went a little psycho over the play. Maybe it's safer."

My smile fades into a worried frown. "But Eric isn't the only one acting strange. Seriously, Jordy was total mood swing guy the other night and acted like he didn't remember who I was at first. It was weird."

"You're better off without one if it isn't the right one," I say wisely. Yeah, easy for me to say, right?

I glance at her again. "Think it was a wolf thing, maybe?"

"Oh, God. More supernatural wonk?" I stop short, looking at her. I shouldn't be surprised. Is there ever any other kind of wonk around here?

I frown. "What did she say?"

Better give her the abridged version. "It's hard to describe...she started out gushing about Jordy, but in that weird Shakespeare-speak like Eric's been spouting. Then she...well, it's like she realized how she was talking was strange, and she said something about being confused and things feeling wrong."

I sigh and give her a half-smile. "By the end she was back to sounding like the Bard, like she'd never admitted something was not quite right."

"Shakespeare, like the play, right? I wonder if they're just trying to get into character?"

I feel like I'm just missing something that should be easy to figure out.

"That's what I thought at first. Eric I thought was just being a big jerk, but Sophie and Jordy...and then Sophie even noticed that she was doing it, but seemed confused why." I shake my head. She doesn't seem like she's seen the same pattern I have--maybe I'm imagining it after all.

"I dunno, maybe I'm the one who's nuts." I push through the main school doors to the parking lot. "Can't wait until this week's over."
