At Dusk

I've been thinking about it, and we couldn't have picked a better time for this if we tried (beyond the whole being-ready for it thing, and I am). I can hear her coming, there's a vulnerability there, as if she bares her soul for all to see. A child-like spirit that warms my soul when I look at her. I slip on a jumper and open the front door, calmly watching her. A log had fallen in the pathway late last night, I'd since forgotten to move it, just thinking about her. I can feel my cheeks coloring, and I smile back at him, wrapping my fingers in his and stepping over the obstacle in my path. I can't speak. Thank you.

My eyes are locked onto his, and I hear the faint accompaniment of night insects in the trees to counterpoint the thud-thud of my heartbeat. He always looks gorgeous to me and I think it isn't all how he looks, but who he is. I lower my eyes for just a second and then look back up into his.

Could she be any more--? I wrap one hand around Dawn's petite waist to help her keep her equilibrium as she steps over the log. Our eyes connected for the longest time as we walk into the cabin.

It feels like stepping into another world here, just like it always does. I smile when I see the firelight and the fainter glow of candlelight from the open door to the bedroom. It looks like he's made a special effort to tidy things up.

I toss my bag down on the couch and turn to face him, smiling. I put my arms around his waist, my tongue untying itself enough to say, "Hi." That seems silly, and I giggle just a little.
