The Spring Break That Wasn't

Apr 08, 2005 17:11

You know, a lot of people get to go somewhere fun for Spring Break. Me? Not so much. My sister's still in the past (hey, she got to take a trip. What, I'm kidding. Can I help it that I have a sick sense of humor?) and I got to help hunt down Jordy and shoot him with a tranq gun because he wolfed out. Big fun. I mean, big.

At least Avasa'sRead more... )

I knock at Dawn's house after school, with my script in hand. I'm not really wanting to get all freakily emotional over it again, but I guess we really do need to test out the theory that reading the lines is all it takes. I hope she doesn't mind me just dropping by like this, I think stuff at her house is still pretty up in the air.

Awesome, surprise visit from J. I'm so ready to see someone who doesn't live here or isn't currently staying here. "Thank God you're here," I say, grabbing her wrist and pulling her into the house. "Let's go up to my room."

She rushes me toward the stairs...I think there's a couple people in the dining room but I don't have time to see who. "Is your sister back yet?" I ask quietly, although I figure she wouldn't be in such a rush to hide if she was.

"Nope, not yet," I say as we reach my room. "I wish she was. Maybe then the people who don't actually live here would go home." I sigh, shutting the door behind us. "I'm feeling overcrowded."

"Yeah, I don't think Avasa counts unless he's understudy for Romeo," I agree. "I don't get it, it happened so fast before...I mean, unless it was the other scene that did it, the one I read with Amanda."

I flip back to the first act and find the scene, point it out to Dawn. "This one, Romeo and Benvolio, I was reading Romeo and all pissed off at Rosaline, which is wrong on so many levels..."

"Hmm." I look at it. "Should we try that one instead, you think?"

Sheesh. You might know that in Sunnydale even the school play can't be normal.

"Guess it can't hurt," I say, and launch into Romeo's lines, which I still seem to know pretty well. And I feel the same sinking depressed feelings I had before.

I glance at Dawn and wait for her to do Benvolio's lines.

I read from the page. Well, I feel the same as always. Except, uh, I'm not sure I understood what I read. Meh, Shakespeare.

I look up at J, waiting for her next lines.

"It's okay," I tell her, flopping across my bed on my stomach and looking over at her. "Yay for weird wonky magic, huh?"

"Yeah, yippee," I reply, without enthusiasm. "But what's the deal? Why is it the one scene that does it?" I have a sinking feeling it's all tied up with Jordy thinking I'm Rosaline somehow, and that pisses me off. I am not Rosaline!

"I dunno," I say, tucking my hair behind my ears. "And neither one of the scenes did anything to me. It was just reading. Reading Shakespeare." I wrinkle my nose.

I sigh. "Well, that's good, blowing off your part was a good idea. I guess maybe I'll talk to Miss Dante about what happened today and see if she has any ideas," I decide glumly. "But I'm not doing any more testing, or else I'll end up as whacked out as the rest of 'em."

That makes me laugh. "Is that just a twisted way of saying I'm not the normal one? Of course, lately I've been kind of a weirdo magnet, so you might have a point." Scott flipping out about his car didn't really count as supernatural weirdness as much as just being a jerk. But there was David getting vamped, and Eric being the first to turn into his character, and whatever strangeness was going on with Jordy. "You know, maybe Rosaline had the right idea. A vow of celibacy might be the way to go."

"I dunno about that," I say before I can think about it. I close my mouth, trying to keep the blush off of my cheeks.

Way to go, Summers. Advertise that you've slept with your much-older boyfriend. Genius.

"Maybe not for you, but I don't have anything that looks remotely like a date for the prom and it's April! It's a little late, but I could be one of those born again virgins," I joke.

It wouldn't be all that hard to forget the one and only time I slept with a guy, my old Kent boyfriend, Greg. Not exactly the thrill of my life, and it pretty much led to us breaking up 'cause then he wanted it all the time. And the one guy I did kind of want to do some exploring with in that department was currently in love with a friend of mine and oh, yeah, couldn't remember my name.

"Um, Dawn? I Hate to say it, but I don't think you do have any normal friends. Which hey, puts me ahead of the game because I've got you. Even if your sister is a little strange."

"Well, I can't bring Avasa to the Prom, either," I point out. "You know, considering that he's years older than me and nobody's supposed to know we're together." I shrug. "If I was 18 it'd be different, but I won't be 18 til after Prom's over."

Oh well. He's worth the sacrifice.

"Yeah, I guess I don't. Normal's kinda over-rated, though," I say.
