You made me pause for thought with the description "independent artist," and how that translates in writerdom--it could mean "self-published" (not a great adjective for a writer, but does have a broad context) or it could mean "freelance" (definitely a more positive term than "self-published," and technically what anyone who writes on spec does is freelance).

Actually, that's good to know. I'm obviously outside my depth here, and probably just applying my well-worn vocabulary of the music world to a field i'm not familiar with.
