Yeah, I love Sars, and I mostly agree with all of that (though I admit to sometimes not having kleenex in the house--if I run out, I tend to forget to resupply until I next have a cold!). But the idea is to not ASSUME you'll stay with friends, to wait for them to say "Oh, if you're here, stay with me!". But...dude. If they're really friends, I expect them to say that. I would. Now, granted, some people I think of as friends but wouldn't expect it of (even if I'd invite them), but if they're actually a good friend....and they have a couch....
